Spreads were tighter again in the US today as post-roll activity picked up in IG leaving HY to charge tighter still (though not managing to make it back below 600bps) as roll re-positioning and tranche technicals seem to be dominating index activity. The ongoing compression in the widest and riskiest credits saw high beta names dramatically outperform low beta today, single-names outperform indices across the board and HVOL, XO, and HY all outperform IG.[More...]

August 7, 2009: Nationwide Survey By CSFB Reveals Real Estate Agent Builder Preference

The July Credit Suisse First Boston Monthly Survey Of Real Estate Agents was made available today fir institutional clients and consultants on the survey. Presented monthly, this 60-page (or thereabouts) publication has been an extremely accurate and predictive document - my first choice when I begin pondering my monthly real estate strategy. Almost always, I focus on the top fifty metro markets and regions, primarily interested in the pure statistics and opinions of "boots on the ground" agents and investors that make this such an excellent read. Another feature of this monthly survey lists agents recommendations for national builders. The percentage number is based upon positive less negative responses from agents. Spreads were broadly wider in the US as all the indices deteriorated. Indices typically underperformed single-names (as we note some pre-roll activity is holding single-names in while macro players drive indices wider) with skews widening in general as IG underperformed but narrowed the skew, HVOL underperformed but narrowed the skew, ExHVOL outperformed pushing the skew wider, XO's skew increased as the index outperformed, and HY's skew widened as it underperformed (with rumors of another HY list today trying to take advantage of the large skew). Only 9.6% of names in IG moved more than their historical vol would imply as higher vol names outperformed lower vol names by 0.82% to 1.31%. IG's vol is around 4.38% per 1 day period, which leaves 98 names higher vol and 27 lower vol than the index. The names having the[More...]

EDITORIAL: MDC Should Have Role At Science Center

Jul. 20--By wide margins, the state Senate and House passed a bill in June allowing the Metropolitan District Commission -- the Hartford area's water and sewer utility -- to raise $1.5 million from ratepayers over the next 10 years to sponsor an interactive water exhibit already installed at the Connecticut Science Center in Hartford, as well as $500,000 for a "water program" at another site, probably the Children's Museum in West Hartford.
These educational programs are in the MDC's and museum-goers' best interest.
In her veto message, the governor said allowing MDC to increase its charges to ratepayers "simply so it can make charitable contributions" is "bad precedent."
