Indexes Do Not Tell The Tale Of Damage

First, pardon all the trading today - some days just require it. I'm already exhausted and its only 2 PM. Second, we've been saying the indexes are not reflecting the carnage seen "underneath" - my watch lists are full of names in the $500M to $5B market cap space which is my sweet spot, and it looks like September 2008 . Although the industrial sector had a rough year in 2008, there were some sectors, like conglomerates, rails, and aerospace and defense sub-sectors, that were able to help boost some of the lagging sub-sectors that relied heavily on residential construction and business spending. Back of Envelope Look at Infrastructure

Back in the old days, we used to look at individual companies, sectors... analyze industry data points, do comparative valuation analysis, read earnings reports with great interest, etc etc. Those were good times. Now, we wait every day for 3 PM, play a bunch of ETFs for a 1 hour trade, and then try to predict what ETFs would be best suited for the next 2-48 hours based on charts. That's "investing" today. Just for old times sake I thought I'd look at a group that I (still) like for the long run - it seems almost every world government is going to fix their issues with infrastructure projects. The problem is the consensus that project after project will get cancelled due to low oil prices and lack of credit. It really does not matter what side of the chalk line you are on - when these stocks rally people will cling to one side of the arguement and when the stocks sell off, they will cling to the other. (NYSE:MDR) (”McDermott”) announced today that its subsidiary, The Babcock & Wilcox Company (”B&W”), has received a new award for the manufacture of nuclear components in support of U.S. defense programs. Analyst: Oil, gas prices benefiting McDermott

HARTFORD, Conn. - Rising oil and gas prices are expected to help drive business for engineering and construction company McDermott International Inc., an analyst said Thursday.
"In the near- to intermediate-term, McDermott's business is likely to be driven by the offshore oil and gas segment," he said in a client note.
With a rebound in the price of oil, bidding by McDermott has picked up over the last several months and will likely drive more contract awards through this year and early 2010 because projects deferred last year are expected to soon start, Jacobson said.
