2009 Will Transform The Coal Industry

Like many other industries, 2009 was a shock to the coal industry. Demand is on track to fall around 100 million tons, or about 10%, from that of the previous year. Given the role of cheap coal in generating baseload electricity, a drop of this scale would have been unfathomable a few years ago. Several factors converged to make this possible--including a poor economy, very low natural gas prices, and lower export demand.[More...]

"China's coal consumption is growing, and it is building coal-powered power plants at a breakneck pace.
"Why? Because they are much cheaper to build and operate than any other power-producing option. China is power starved, and coal is the main resource used for generating electricity in the[More...]

Let me preface this piece by saying I stole this specific instrument from Jeffrey Saut, who mentioned it in his weekly missive. Long time readers will know I've mentioned this market has become all about asset allocation, and sectors - I noticed this late in 2007 when we were hiding out in commodities while many other sectors were imploding but other than a few periods when "everything" is going down (or up) it appears a lot of individual stock selection is going out the window and "sectors" are more important. Some themes are broad like "China" or "commodities" (which in many ways are now the same theme), where others are narrower such as "casual dining restaurants". I don't know if its the dominance of program trading or the growing popularity of ETFs but this seems to be a secular change in the[More...]

Coal was one of our best performing sector groups in latter 2007 through summer 2008. While much of the focus of late has been on natural gas, the coal stocks have been ripping in even larger magnitude. I was a bull on coal over natural gas (although the market in its student body left trading simply moves all commodities together) because of the portability of coal over natural gas. We were early on this theme as the market was so focused on oil stocks at the time, and made a lot of money (Dec 6, 2007: Coal Stocks Quietly in Bull Market) I wrote a bevy of pieces about this 1.5 years ago... but again, the market is not very granular nowadays; it likes big sweeping themes that are simple: i.e. commodities good.
Massey Energy Company announced today that it has completed a reserve exchange with various subsidiaries of Foundation Coal Holdings, Inc., through which it has acquired approximately 23 million tons of strategically located coal reserves and the operating assets associated with Foundation's idle Laurel Creek Operation in Mingo County, WV. Importantly, the transaction includes a coal processing plant, a permitted impoundment, permitted surface reserves, idled underground mines, and related mining equipment.'We are excited about this transaction and the synergies and development opportunities it provides,' said Don Blankenship, Massey's CEO and Chairman. 'The addition of a permitted processing plant and impoundment in this area will enable us to more economically mine over 100 million tons of Massey controlled reserves and further enhances our position in Central Appalachia.'In the exchange, Massey conveyed to Foundation approximately 19 million tons of nonstrategic coal reserves, and assumed certain reclamation liabilities and coal sales obligations.Company DescriptionMassey Energy Company, headquartered in Richmond, Virginia, with operations in West Virginia, Kentucky and Virginia, is the fourth largest coal company in the United States based on produced coal revenue and is a part of the Standard & Poor's 500 Index.Forward Looking StatementsStatements in this press release relating to future events and other disclosures and statements that are not historical facts are forward-looking statements that involve risks and uncertainties.
