Good morning. Some buying interest has developed this morning after the S&P has fallen a little over -3% so far this month. Strength in overseas markets, a few better-than-expected earnings reports, some positive analyst commentary, and no additional bad news from the financial sector have provided the positive bias. Like usual, we also have rising expectations for another rate cut as losses from the subprime-mortgage defaults grow. Meanwhile, higher oil and gold prices and the falling dollar also remain in focus this morning especially since there's nothing of interest on the economic calendar for today. Taranaki's energy industry hosted the media on a tour of some of its sites in the region.
THERE'S a Wellington-based energy industry organisation called Pepanz, as in Petroleum Exploration and Production Association of New Zealand.
It used to be called Peanz, as in Petroleum Exploration Association of New Zealand, but a few years ago it changed its name to reflect the fact that it not only represents exploration companies, but also "downstream" organisations such as power companies.

Sometimes profit results aren't quite what they seem - and the latest result just posted by Port Taranaki is a classic case in point, as Rob Maetzig reports.
WHEN the board of Port Taranaki Ltd gathered in New Plymouth on Friday to approve the company's financial result for the opening six months of this financial year, on the face of things there should have been an air of celebration.
After all, the figures in the six- monthly report showed a massive increase in profitability from the New Plymouth port's operations.

Methanex Set to Restart Motunui Methanol Plant

METHANEX is restarting its Motunui methanol plant in Taranaki later this month, with revenues put at up to NZ$650 million, but it may hasten a predicted national gas supply gap, expected about 2015.
Methanex is hoping to get more gas to run the plant till mid- 2010 and could also reopen its Waitara Valley plant next year if it can get gas at the right price.
The Waitara plant, which produces 500,000 tonnes a year, will be shut down a few weeks after Motunui is up and running.

Closure of West Fraser's Eurocan Paper Mill Expected to Have Modest Impact on Pacific Northern Gas Ltd. And Its Customers

One of Pacific Northern Gas Ltd.'s (TSX: PNG)(TSX: PNG.PR.A) ("PNG") large industrial customers, West Fraser Timber Co. Ltd. ("West Fraser"), announced the permanent closure of its Eurocan mill in Kitimat, B.C. which is expected to take place on January 31, 2010.
Under the terms of its transportation agreement with PNG for the Kitimat plant, which expires December 31, 2013, West Fraser is entitled to cancel its obligations by providing PNG with a termination payment that would recover almost 80 percent of the lost revenues under the remaining term of the agreement.
If this is the case, PNG's anticipates limited impact on future earnings.

For the third quarter of 2009, Methanex reported Adjusted EBITDA(1) of $31.0 million and a net loss of $0.8 million ($0.01 per share on a diluted basis).
This compares with Adjusted EBITDA of $24.8 million and a net loss of $5.7 million ($0.06 per share on a diluted basis) for the second quarter of 2009.
