Will MER And CFC Bankrupt BAC

Today is the tale of two story’s about BAC’s health. On the one hand Bloomberg wrote today how BAC’s purchase of Merrill was a “steal” based on company filings with the SEC. On the other hand, bank analyst wrote just the opposite on BAC’s health last night. In fact, Whalen discredited BAC’s SEC filings. And rather than being a steal, the implications of the MER and CFC acquisitions by BAC are that BAC’s equity is worth zero and bondholders might have to take a 30% or more haircut next year.[More...]

U.S. equity markets ended only slightly lower on Tuesday as early morning economic data started off the day with a spurt of confidence. The ISM Non-Manufacturing report gauged Chicago area service related industries deteriorating at a lower rate than previous months in April. The report clocked in at 43.7, above the markets estimate of 42.2 and greater than the March level of 40.8. Goldman ICSC store sales for the previous week also improved at a rate of 0.7% opposed to the -0.7% decline in the week before. Federal reserve chairman Ben Bernanke testified before the Congressional Joint Economic Committee at 10 am, claiming that he expected unemployment to top out under 10% and that the U.S. would see 2% GDP growth for the 2010 fiscal year. When prodded, Bernanke swore that he had no part in forcing Bank of America (BAC) CEO Ken Lewis to buy Merrill Lynch at the end of[More...]

Nov. 16--Brian Moynihan is facing a make-or-break moment tomorrow in his quest to become head of America's largest bank, as he and two other Boston-connected executives head to Washington for a congressional hearing on Bank of America's controversial takeover of Merrill Lynch.

Moynihan, a former top executive at FleetBoston Financial and now head of Bank of America's powerful retail unit, has been considered a top contender to replace Ken Lewis, the embattled chief executive of the Charlotte-based banking behemoth.

But Moynihan, 50, is now considered by some to be damaged goods due to his own ties, as a top executive at Bank of America, to the Merrill Lynch deal last year.
