TSE ordered to pay 10.7 bil. yen to Mizuho Securities, mulling appeal

Dec. 4--TOKYO -- The Tokyo District Court ordered the Tokyo Stock Exchange on Friday to pay damages of about 10.7 billion yen to Mizuho Securities Co., saying the Tokyo bourse is more to blame in a case of botched trading in 2005 that caused the brokerage to incur hefty losses.
The TSE said the exchange may appeal the ruling, while the brokerage released a statement saying it will examine the response with lawyers.
Mizuho Financial Group Inc.'s brokerage unit sued the TSE in October 2006, seeking 41.5 billion yen in damages because the Tokyo bourse's computer system failed to respond to a cancellation order for a large number of erroneous sell orders it placed on shares of J-Com Co. -- now J-COM Holdings Co. -- on the Mothers market for start-up firms in December 2005.

The national recession has nurtured unemployment rates the likes of which Ashtabula County has not been seen since the mid-1980s.
The highest rate thus far this year came in July, when 7,100 county residents, or 14.3 percent of the workforce, were unemployed.

MUFG eyes 1 tril. yen capital boost via public offerings

Nov. 14--TOKYO -- Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc., Japan's biggest banking group, is considering raising up to 1 trillion yen to strengthen its capital base through public offerings of common shares by the end of the year, sources familiar with the matter said Saturday.
MUFG's move is aimed at enhancing its financial standing in line with an expected tightening of international regulations on capital adequacy at banks.
The size of the latest capital boost plan surpasses these earlier rounds of fundraising.

5 major banks report group net profits for April-Sept.

Nov. 13--TOKYO -- Five of Japan's top six banks, including Mizuho Financial Group Inc., posted net profits for the April-September period amid the easing of the global financial turmoil, although three of them saw profits decline from a year earlier, according to their financial results released Friday.
Mizuho Financial, Japan's second-largest banking group by assets, reported a group net profit of 87.81 billion yen for the first half of fiscal 2009 ending next March, down 7.1 percent from a year earlier.
"The worst is behind us, but we need to operate carefully and safely," Mizuho Financial Group President Takashi Tsukamoto told a press conference, voicing concern over the expected slow pace of the nation's economic recovery amid stagnant capital investment and a weak job market.

Bankers' Body Nominates SMBC Chief As New Chairman

Sep. 24--TOKYO -- The Japanese Bankers Association said Thursday it has nominated Masayuki Oku, president of Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp., to serve as its chairman for one year from next April, succeeding Katsunori Nagayasu, president of the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ.
The post is assumed on a rotational basis by top managers of Japan's three megabank groups -- Mizuho Financial Group Inc., Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group Inc. and Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc.

Mizuho Corporate Bank Ties Up With Brazil Banking Group Itau Unibanco

Sep. 14--TOKYO -- Mizuho Corporate Bank, a key banking arm of Mizuho Financial Group Inc., said Monday it has signed a memorandum of understanding with Itau Unibanco, one of the largest banking groups in Brazil, to cooperate in areas including corporate financing and settlement business.
The deal will enable Mizuho Corporate to provide enhanced services to its existing customers by utilizing Itau Unibanco's network of about 5,000 outlets in Brazil and information held by the Brazilian bank, it said.
Mizuho Corporate also aims to boost support for Japanese business clients seeking to enter Brazil whose economy is expected to expand.

Sumitomo Mitsui Eyes Ending Capital Tie-Up With Daiwa Securities

Sep. 4--TOKYO -- Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group Inc. said Friday it is in talks with Daiwa Securities Group Inc. over reviewing their capital tie-up on Daiwa Securities SMBC Co.
The financial group made the announcement in responding to media reports that it is considering dissolving the venture with Japan's No.
SMFG is considering selling its 40 percent stake in Daiwa Securities SMBC, a securities house serving corporate investors, for around 200 billion yen, to the Daiwa side, sources close to the matter said.

Mizuho's Capital Increase Falls Short of Targeted 600 Bil. Yen

Aug. 3--TOKYO -- Mizuho Financial Group Inc. said Monday it will raise a total of 529.2 billion yen through a public offering and third-party allocation of new shares, falling short of its original target of around 600 billion yen due to sluggish stock markets.
With the capital increase, Japan's second-largest banking group will see its capital adequacy ratio rising 0.9 percentage point from 10.55 percent at the end of March.
Unlike many other rivals that succeeded in reporting profits for the April-June quarter, Mizuho said Friday it remained in the red with a group net loss of 4.49 billion yen on swelling bad loans and losses on derivatives contracts.

Jul. 16--Merchant ships, which have been riding at anchor off our shores for months, are building up a full head of steam as they look to benefit from increased Chinese demand for raw materials.
The Baltic Dry Index, which measures the international shipping prices of various dry bulk cargoes, has risen 7.33 percent to 3324, from a recent low of just below 3000 and a high of 4300.
MFG says the companies most likely to do well out of the restocking by China are Xstrata, 6.20p better at 672.2p, which it rates a buy, and Vedanta Resources, 21p dearer at 1467p, rated neutral.

Ex-Tokyo Tomin Bank Chief Nishizawa to Head Gov't Entity for Small Firms

Jul. 13--TOKYO -- The Cabinet Office said Monday it has nominated Hiroshige Nishizawa, former head of Tokyo Tomin Bank, for president of a new government organization designed to turn around smaller companies in regional areas.
The new entity, expected to be launched in September, will be a local version of the former state-backed Industrial Revitalization Corp. of Japan, which was in operation between 2003 and 2007, and assisted in turning around cash-strapped corporations, mainly large ones.
Nishizawa, a graduate of Kyoto University, became president of Tokyo Tomin Bank in 1997 after serving as a board member of the Industrial Bank of Japan, which later merged into Mizuho Financial Group Inc.
