Phoenix Rising?

With the US equity market averages either probing or breaking down through their November lows, is it time to buy Phoenix stocks? Others have picked up on that theme, with the latest being a Minyanville article on buying beaten up stocks. With that in mind, I screened the US market for stocks with the following characteristics: Stock price between $1 and $5 (low-priced stocks)Down at least 80% from a year ago (beaten up)Market cap of $100 million or more (were once "real" companies)Net insider buying in the last six months (some downside protection from insider activity) This screen gives us a list of low-priced[More...]

MGIC Won't Soon Be Coming Back - Analyst Blog

MGIC Investment Corporation (MGIC) is the largest private mortgage insurer in the U.S., offering private mortgage insurance across the country, the District of Columbia, and in Puerto Rico through its subsidiary, Mortgage Guaranty Insurance Corporation (MGIC). MTG's core 3Q08 results were slightly worse than we anticpated. The results continued to be impacted by increases in both the number of delinquent loans and foreclosures due to a further decline of home prices and slowing of economy. In addition, higher loss severities, especially in California and Florida, also negatively affected the results. The company has taken several combative actions to bolster its capital. We expect significant overhangs for the industry in general and for MTG in particular, for at least the next several[More...]

140 Stocks Returning 7% Last Week

Below is a list of all stocks returning >7% in the past week, and over $2 billion in market cap. Always interesting to see what is in favor, and when the market bounces where the money is flowing - the group below is sorted from highest to lowest returnMain themes that were winners last week were: solar, home builders, fertilizer, retail, coal, oil services, and infrastructure. The fund was represented very well - of the 52 long positions, 17 were represented in this group (I bolded the names) (note: PBR is represented by its very heavy weighting in Brazilian index ETF - EWZ). This is essentially why the fund was able to outperform once again last week, despite having quite substantial cash holdings - having 3 of the top holdings earn 11-17% also did not hurt.Quite a few old positions in the fund also did well, I shaded those in green<table str="" style="border-collapse: collapse; width: 268pt;" border="0"[More...]
