Short Interest Update

If you are an avid short seller, the financial sector is of particular interest. I did some research on short interest levels for various financial-related industries and, as a whole, the sector's short interest level was down 3% (as of Jan 15th). The industries researched are the 1) broker-dealers, large banks, 2) securities processors, 3) regional banks, 4) online brokers, 5) specialty/mortgage finance, 6) life insurance, 7) asset management, 8) p&c insurance, and 9) reinsurance. The largest increase in short interest came from the securities processors, up +42% (partially thanks to STT: +86%). The runners up were the broker-dealers and large banks, up 8%. The WSJ reports that after more than 6ys of wrestling with the question of whether meat and milk from cloned animals are safe to eat, the FDA is expected to declare as early as next week that they are. The FDA had asked producers of cloned livestock not to sell food products from such animals pending its ruling on their safety. It isn't clear whether the FDA will lift this voluntary hold. While many consumer groups still oppose it, the FDA declaration that cloned animal products are safe would be a milestone for a small cadre of biotech co’s that want to make a business out of producing copies of prize dairy cows and other farm animals, effectively taking the selective breeding practiced on farms for centuries to the cutting edge. Mitsubishi Corp., MMC, GS Yuasa Plan New Lithium-Ion Battery Plant

Jun. 24--TOKYO -- Mitsubishi Corp., a major trading house, Mitsubishi Motors Corp. and GS Yuasa Corp. will jointly build a new manufacturing plant for large-size lithium-ion batteries for use in electric vehicles, The Yomiuri Shimbun learned Wednesday.
Construction of the plant is expected to start as early as autumn with 2011 targeted for its operational startup.
The joint project, which calls for a total investment of more than ¥10 billion, comes in response to MMC's future plan to increase production of its electric vehicle, the i-MiEV, which will be launched in late July, industry sources said.
