More Tinkering In The Markets? Do You Trust Your Government?

Alex’s Notes: Hat tip to Simon Heapes who pointed this article out to me this morning. I certainly found the amazing drop in oil price strange when it occurred. When I see an amazing rise or drop, I have learned (ok call it being cynical) that many times it might just be someone tinkering in the markets. I have seen far too much evidence of this kind of tinkering PERSONALLY to just dismiss it anymore. So when a massive shift occurs, not only do I look at market fundamentals, what the technical traders are saying, but also I look for motive and manipulation. To assume we trade in “free markets” any more is simply naive. Does this mean I think every move in the markets are contrived? No, that is not what I am saying. What I am saying is, that markets have been manipulated for far smaller incentive than the sovereignty and or control of an entire monetary[More...]

Drilling Offshore to Affect World Oil Prices... and other Tales from the Iraq-Pakistan Border

Various individuals have argued for drilling in the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) as a means to affect the price of oil. This is true despite this recent assessment by the Department of Energy's Energy Information Administration, the Federal Government's nonpartisan analytical group on energy issues. From Annual Energy Outlook related analyses (June 2007): The OCS is estimated to contain substantial resources of crude oil and natural gas; however, some areas of the OCS are subject to drilling restrictions. With energy prices rising over the past several years, there has been increased interest in the development of more domestic oil and natural gas supply, including OCS resources. In the past, Federal efforts to encourage exploration and development activities in the deep waters of the OCS have been limited primarily to[More...]

Sep. 4--AT&T Inc. said Thursday that it will satisfy at least one of the demands of its many iPhone users by bringing multimedia messaging service, or MMS, to the iPhone 3G and 3GS on Sept. 25.

Apple Inc. said several months ago that AT&T would be one of the last iPhone carriers worldwide to offer the long-established service, angering some iPhone users.

But the absence of MMS was just one item on the menu of iPhone users' complaints directed toward the Dallas-based carrier.

Aug. 21--Shell's investment in its Alaskan Arctic offshore exploration program has now far exceeded $3 billion, with the company yet to be able to turn a drill bit, Shell's Alaska manager told an Anchorage business group Aug. 14.

About $2.2 billion of Shell's money is tied up in bids for federal Outer Continental Shelf leases in the Chukchi Sea that are now in limbo because of a U.S. Court of Appeals decision in a lawsuit brought by environmental groups, Pete Slaiby, Shell's vice president for Alaska, told the Anchorage Builders and Managers Association.

Much of the remaining investment was for preparations to explore Beaufort Sea leases in 2007, an effort stopped by a separate environmental suit in the Ninth Circuit Court.
