Agriculture is one of my favorite "long term" themes as a crowded planet modernizes - but the recession has certainly hit the names in the sector more than I thought; I thought these would be a bit more recession proof. In the first few days of the week, 2 under achievers of late - Mosaic (MOS) in fertilizer and Monsanto (MON) in seeds/herbicide have reported and despite disappointing numbers have not been hammered. In fact Mosaic rallied after its report Monday evening but then again as we noted - by midday yesterday almost every stock was up. At some point all the bad news will be in these stocks, but it is unclear if that point is now.[More...]

Shorting Gold: Eight More Signs Gold is Overdue for a Correction by Louis Basenese, Advisory Panelist Senior Analyst, The Oxford Club Two weeks ago I told you it was time to start shorting gold. And the recommendation, as I expected, ignited a brew-ha-ha on our Investment U message board. That’s because there’s not much middle ground. Most investors are either fanatical or supremely skeptical. If you have any doubt, check out the comments - and all the wonderful names I got called - on our website. But since I’m a glutton for punishment, and since gold moved in exactly the opposite direction I predicted, it’s time for an update and a[More...]

Stock market volatility is back, a signal to some experts that the powerful rally that started in early March may be coming to an end.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose or fell more than 100 points in seven of the past 12 trading days, capped by a 205-point advance on Thursday that left the index almost 53 percent higher than its closing level on March 9.

The Dow's muted 17-point gain on Friday masked the fact that it swung nearly 108 points throughout the day after the government reported the unemployment rate rose to 10.2 percent in October.

U.S. Bancorp Grabs Failed Banks: The Minneapolis Firm Quietly Became the Nation's Largest Buyer of Busted Banks, While Exposing Itself to Minimal Downside Risk.

Indeed, U.S. Bancorp has over the past year acquired 12 failed banks and thrifts, from Southern California to Idaho, with assets totaling $35 billion.

In each transaction, U.S. Bancorp has picked up valuable deposits and branches while cushioning itself from loan losses through agreements with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. On Friday, the FDIC actually paid U.S. Bancorp about $500 million in cash to take the nine FBOP banks off its hands.

The deals have enabled U.S. Bancorp, the nation's sixth-largest bank with $264 billion in assets, to double its branch network in California and expand its presence in several key markets, including Chicago and Los Angeles, with little downside risk, say analysts.
