Agriculture is one of my favorite "long term" themes as a crowded planet modernizes - but the recession has certainly hit the names in the sector more than I thought; I thought these would be a bit more recession proof. In the first few days of the week, 2 under achievers of late - Mosaic (MOS) in fertilizer and Monsanto (MON) in seeds/herbicide have reported and despite disappointing numbers have not been hammered. In fact Mosaic rallied after its report Monday evening but then again as we noted - by midday yesterday almost every stock was up. At some point all the bad news will be in these stocks, but it is unclear if that point is now.[More...]

And the recommendation, as I expected, ignited a brew-ha-ha on our Investment U message board. That’s because there’s not much middle ground. Most investors are either fanatical or supremely skeptical. If you have any doubt, check out the comments - and all the wonderful names I got called - on our website.

Oct. 25--It seems simple enough: If investors are souring on the dollar and gravitating to other currencies, why not follow along?

Investors can buy foreign bonds; FDIC-insured certificates of deposit denominated in a currency such as the Australian dollar or Brazilian real; a mutual fund or exchange-traded fund that invests in a single foreign currency or a variety of them; or funds that use leverage to magnify a gain or loss on a currency bet.

It gained about 35 percent against the U.S. dollar this year.
