Starting To Get Worried But Not Really

I hope that my internal feelings are a contrarian but as every day that goes along that I continue to scan my charts and see nothing that looks like it wants to rally or make higher highs in a proper fashion I get a little more nervous that I begin to think that this bear market is going to go on a lot longer than I would like it to. I am not sure where I heard the saying, or if I even ever heard the saying and have come up with it on my own by studying the market, but if a bear market does not last six months or less it usually last two years or longer. The problem now is the it is clearly past six months since the top in November but at the same time there are absolutely zero charts that are ought there with beautiful patterns that make me feel comfortable that we have a real rally coming along any time soon. When it comes to making a living in the stock market I have had no problem doing that for the past thriteen years. But all of a sudden this year, this trendless market has made it near impossible to make a lot of money. There are a few mutual funds that are up for the year but the majority of the greatest funds and greatest traders are finding it very difficult to make money in a market that simply does not go anywhere.Now, while we have had some big winners like PDO, XCO, and DGLY, we have also had some disappointments like BRKR BKE and AEHR. If this would have been a start of a bull market, like 2003 was, after the 2000-2002 downtrend, I am sure they would have all worked but for right now things still rarely work. The Bottom Callers And Confused Follow-Through Day Followers

I have a special place in my heart for bottom callers. I feel their pain even though I have never in my nearly 13 years of investing tried this game for more than a small moment. I have had mixed results using that methodology vs. the methodology that helped make me a lot of money in 1999, 2003-2006. 2007 was a grind but what a lot of people don’t seem to understand is that this bear market of 2008 is not CURRENTLY in a bullish uptrend.Some people have made comments that the market is in a “FTD” since the Nassy flashed a signal not too long ago. First of all, the volume that day was weak. Second of all, the price gain was weak. Third, the price did not retake the 50 day moving average which history has shown greatly increases the odds of a bull market starting. Humana (HUM) the health benefits management company, rose $2.17 (4.86%) to close at $46.81 yesterday, after reporting earnings that beat estimates. The company reported Q2 revenues of $209.9 million, for an EPS of $1.24.Compared to the same period a year ago, revenues were down 3 percent from $216.8 million, or $1.28 per share. However, Q2 EPS beat both the company’s forecast of $1.15 to $1.20 and analysts estimates of of $1.18.United Stationers (USTR) which jumped $6.12 points to $44.45 on Friday 08/01/08, from Thursday’s closing price of $38.33 on a positive earnings report, gained another $3.44 to $47.89 today.
