Notable Bankruptcies of 2008: Final Tally

In mid-August I predicted that “major” bankruptcies for 2008 would reach 225 (see Bankruptcies Revisited). Through October there had been 172 such bankruptcies, as reported by Bankrupctydata.com. That implied a pace of around 210 bankruptcies, well short of my prediction. At the time however, I suggested that the filing pace was likely to quicken in November and December as the economy deteriorated at a more rapid clip. Sure enough, the final numbers bear out my prediction. According to Bankruptcydata.com, “major” filings reached 231 in 2008. 231 bankruptcies falls far short of the 289 “major” bankruptcies in 2000 and 383 in 2001[More...]

The velocity might be a bit of surprise (10% in two days) but the direction should not be. Well....whoever was at 1490 in the SPX must have gone out to lunch at an inopportune time yesterday, because the level finally broke and generated a pretty aggressive follow-through. The chart suddenly looks pretty ugly, and with little near-term prospect of monetary relief this market may decide to have a proper go at the downside. School District Benefits From Bank's Unsolicited Donation

Jan. 22--A Mitchell bank has made an unsolicited donation to help fix computers in the Mitchell School District's troubled laptop program.
The bank's local president, in turn, says he hopes others in town will consider making similar donations to the district when the need arises.
First Dakota National Bank gave $5,000 to help pay for repairs for the laptop computers, helping ease a district-wide problem that has been exacerbated by the bankruptcy of the MPC Corporation, which owned most of the company that sold the computers to the district and which promised to make repairs to damaged units.

Hatfield, who lost her job at MPC Corp. on Wednesday, is one of nearly 20,000 jobless people -- half the state's unemployed -- who live in the Treasure Valley.
Prospects are remote for a way out of Idaho's rising unemployment anytime soon.

Company's Bankruptcy Compounds Laptop Woes

Nov. 8--Friday's announcement that MPC Corporation -- which supplies Gateway computers to area schools -- has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy compounds a problem school districts statewide are having with broken laptops and questionable service.
Gateway sold its professional segments, which sells to businesses and schools, to MPC in 2007.
The news comes at a time when Otto Doll, commissioner of the Bureau of Information and Telecommunications, estimates that more than 1,000 state and school Gateway laptops are down and awaiting parts.

MPC Corporation today announced unaudited financial results for the second quarter ended June 30, 2008. Net revenue was $125.4 million, an increase of $71.8 million, or 134%, compared to the same period in 2007. The net loss was $12.5 million, or $0.37 per basic and diluted common share. MPC Corporation announced today that it has received a notice letter from the American Stock Exchange . The AMEX notice indicates that MPC is not in compliance with Rule 1003 of the AMEX Company Guide in that it has stockholders' equity of less than $2 million and has sustained losses from continuing operations and net losses in two of its three most recent fiscal years. The AMEX notice requires that MPC submit to the AMEX by June 9, 2008 its plan to bring the company into compliance with listing standards by November 9, 2009. MPC is in the process of preparing this plan that it intends to submit to AMEX by the June 9, 2008 deadline. If MPC does not submit a plan, or if the plan is not accepted by AMEX, the company will be subject to delisting procedures.
