Marshall Huebner is a person Zero Hedge has great respect and admiration for. The Davis Polk lawyer, in addition to having an impressive work ethic with many successful bankruptcies under his belt (Delta's 2007 emergence being a case in point: in fact, he will likely be making a repeat appearance there quite soon now that Goldman has envisioned another ramp to $200/barrel of crude), volunteers 13 hours every Sunday night as an Emergency Medical Technician - a noble dedication to his community. Marshall's dedication however is not only to his immediate community, but to American taxpayers in general: a little known fact is that Davis Polk is the official yet still formally unannounced legal advisor for the Federal Reserve. And no other company has tested Marshall's mettle more than AIG, which has been on the verge of complete financial collapse on many occasions over the past[More...]

So I'm still banging away on research towards a piece on Wall Street employment and compensation. But I'm going to steal a little of my own thunder to get info to you in a timely way. I have had some recent conversations with friends from the street and what I am being told is now being confirmed in a Bloomberg article entitled "CitiGroup Plans to Raise Salaries by as Much as 50%": Citigroup Inc., the U.S. bank that got $45 billion of government funds, will raise base salaries by as much as 50 percent to help compensate for a reduction in annual bonuses, a person familiar with the plan said. The biggest increases will go to investment bankers and traders, said the person who declined to be identified. Workers in consumer banking, credit cards, legal and risk management will see smaller salary adjustments. No you are not[More...]

The markets on Tuesday experienced a tough grind. They chopped lower in the morning, went to new pullback lows and then reversed around the 11 o’clock hour. Then they went into a slow steady upward chop for most of the session, reaching the afternoon highs with about 10 minutes to go, but rolled over in those last 10 minutes to closed mixed on the day.
The markets ended mixed but generally higher, although it was a rather lackluster trading session and stocks didn’t appear to make much progress, particularly on Nasdaq, where a lower SOX index put pressure on the NDX all day. The day started out with a move lower that held support and bounced sharply, but then they meandered in a coil-like fashion for the rest of the session until late in the day when they rolled over a bit. Only in the last 10 minutes did they bounce back again to maintain some of their gains.
