V-Shaped Revenue Recovery Combined With L-Shaped CapEx Growth

The chart below demonstrates two things: i) the revenue decline in the current quarter indicates no inflection point in revenue pick up, and ii) expectations are for a V-shaped recovery in revenue. So the logical question is where will all this revenue come from? With massive excess capacity overflowing in the economy, pundits point to inventories, which will be "restocked" in order to increase sales for all these lean and mean companies that continue laying off workers even as the recession progresses. In other words, capex spending should already be picking up, as that is the primary driver of revenue increases down the line: indeed, a simple fact nobody likes to talk[More...]

Investing In 2009

There is a special challenge for investors planning for 2009. It is easy to get caught up in emotion, especially when so much is going wrong. This causes people to look backward. Investors can meet the challenge by using a sound analytical framework and by looking ahead. For those nearing retirement, this is particularly crucial. My advice to our investors emphasizes two major points: 1. The news flow is incessantly negative — fraud, corruption, mismanagement, greed, and every proposed solution called a bailout. When this message is repeated in every news source, it is also reflected in current market prices. 2. The market has a gift for us. Our initial rebound target is Dow 11,000. Let us see[More...]

Many Americans would probably be surprised to learn that small businesses matter more to the U.S. economy than the corporate behemoths that comprise the S&P 500. In fact, small businesses account for more than 50 percent of U.S. nonfarm private gross domestic product and employ roughly half of all private-sector workers, according to Small Business Administration data. Unfortunately, individuals who really should be aware of this fact -- politicians and other public officials -- have persisted in enacting policies that make it ever harder for entrepreneurs and owner-managers to earn their daily crust of bread. Ultimately, as Charles Hugh Smith, publisher of the Of Two Minds blog and author of Weblogs & New Media:[More...]

Getting close but pardon me if I am not overconfident. I am not, and that's probably how it should be. A break of the downtrend would become much more significant with a break above the noted resistance at 225 as mentioned before. In addition, I like to think that my ability to uncover interesting stories and identify interesting sources of insight about what is really going on the world is also a draw.
A List of Best Performing Stocks Year to Date

Since we have a break in the action here, instead of doing our normal best performing stocks of the week (not many made the list this week due to a poor market), this is a good time to look at what is performing best so far this year. Further, due the composition of the list and with many of these stocks due for a correction it's probably worthwhile to take a look now, as things might change relatively soon. We looked at a similar list in early November (Nov 4: How to Make 75% in 3 Months) when the list was dominated by large cap Chinese stocks, a few big cap tech stocks, Indian stocks, and fertilizer. Except for fertilizer most of those groups stunk for the better part of the following 5 months, and hence "returned to the mean". However, the list did turn out a few gems we jumped on, so looking at such lists helps us to identify what has been working and what other[More...]
