Late last year, steel stocks saw some of the sharpest sell-offs in the market. The Steel Market Vectors Fund (NYSE: SLX) fell from $114 to $20, and most steel producing companies hit five-year lows. We highlight General Motors Corp. (GM), AK Steel Holding Corp. (AKS) and ArcelorMittal (MT). To my mind, the most significant "green shoot" we have seen in the economic data was the topping out of the four-week average of initial claims for unemployment insurance in early April. In this regard, I find today's data deeply troubling. New claims rose by 32,000 in the last week to 637,000. This caused the four-week average to rise by 6000 to 630,500. While it is still well below its peak of 658,750 this reversal of direction is distinctly unwelcome. Oct. 23--BEIJING -- The 8.9 percent real growth in China's gross domestic product in the July-September period from the same period in the previous year demonstrates how the Chinese economy has been moving toward recovery, escaping the damage caused by the global economic crisis before other countries.
However, this growth has been boosted by the Chinese government's massive spending on economic stimulus measures.
Japan, the United States and European countries, all of which are lagging in their own economic recoveries, expect China to lead the global economy out of recession.

Oct. 19--The callback of laid-off mine workers on the Iron Range is contributing to improving unemployment rates in the region.
Unemployment rates fell about 1 percent in September in St. Louis, Itasca and Koochiching counties, according to numbers released today.
Both cities' unemployment peaked in June -- Hibbing at 18.7 percent, Virginia with 17 percent.

Oct. 2--In the past year, five new businesses have decided to come to Georgetown County, investing a total of $37 million in land, building and equipment and creating 162 jobs, according to Georgetown County's Economic Development office.
"It's not all doom and gloom.
The county and city of Georgetown have been trying to recover after ArcelorMittal decided to close down its steel mill indefinitely July 10 due to a lack of orders, laying off more than 200 workers.

Cliffs to Boost Iron Ore Production

Sep. 12--Cliffs Natural Resources, the parent company to United Taconite on the Iron Range, said Friday it expects to produce more iron ore this year than earlier projected.
In another indication that the economy is starting to strengthen, the company said it expects to sell about 16 million long tons of iron ore in 2009, an increase from previous expectations of 13 million to 14 million tons, according to a company news release Friday.
"As our customers are increasing steel production and restarting blast furnaces in North America and Europe, we are seeing modest improvements in orders and in market expectations for steelmaking raw materials," said Donald J. Gallagher, president of Cliff's North American business unit, in a prepared statement.

Seminar Set to Assist Jobless in 3 Counties: State Employment Agency to Offer Aid

Sep. 4--Job seekers and those soon to be out of work with the end of the tourism season will have a special job forum next week to help them find work.
Two local legislators organized the forum, headed up by the S.C. Employment Security Commission on Sept. 12, for residents in Horry, Georgetown and Williamsburg counties.
Sen. Dick Elliott, D-North Myrtle Beach, and Rep. Vida Miller, D-Pawleys Island, organized the forum, which will take place at the AVX Technology Center at Horry-Georgetown Technical College from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., said Clark Newsom, spokesman for the commission.

Aug. 22--Horry County's jobless rate improved in July compared with June, but officials say the jobless situation is more bleak than the numbers show.
Horry County's rate dropped to 10.4 percent in July from 11.3 percent in June -- compared with 6 percent in July 2008, according to statistics released Friday by the S.C. Employment Security Commission.
Despite the drop in rates, the labor market continues to show weakness with a lack of job growth coupled with greater numbers of discouraged workers who have given up looking for work, which takes them out of the jobless statistics, said Don Schunk, a research economist at Coastal Carolina University.

Aug. 21--The Grand Strand's jobless rate improved in July compared to June, but remained significantly higher than the same month a year ago, according to statistics released this morning.
Horry County's rate dropped to 10.4 percent in July from 11.3 percent in June -- compared to 6 percent in July 2008.
In Georgetown County, where more than 200 people lost their jobs this summer with the shut down of the ArcelorMittal steel mill, the jobless rate ticked up to 12.2 percent in July, compared to 12.1 percent in June and 7.1 percent in July 2008.

Better Times in Local Forecast: Economist: Tough Times Wind Down

Key local economic indicators, including unemployment levels, home and retail sales, hotel occupancy and airplane deplanements, suggest the end may be in sight, a Coastal Carolina University research economist told local business leaders.
Unemployment will be around 13.8 percent in Horry County and 13.9 percent in Georgetown County from September to November, he told the Waccamaw Regional Council of Governments' Grand Strand Economic Outlook Board meeting.
The summer rates will likely finish up the end of August at around 11 percent for Horry County and 12 percent for Georgetown County, Schunk said.

Aug. 8--Ports can provide a competitive edge for areas vying with other communities to attract new businesses, said John Hassell, interim CEO of the S.C. State Ports Authority.
Hassell was one of the keynote speakers at the 12th annual Regional Growth Summit Friday at Coastal Carolina University, which focused this year on the importance of ports to the Carolinas.
There are 327 official ports of entry in the U.S., according to U.S. Customs and Border Patrol.
