The Paper Industry: Wood You Invest?

Many manufacturers of various paper and packaging products are trading at massive discounts to their 52-week highs. Companies such as International Paper (which we discussed here), Catalyst Paper (CTL), Domtar (UFS), MeadWestvaco (MWV) and Sappi Ltd (SPP) are all trading below even their book values. As such, many investors wonder if there is value to be found among this bunch. Unfortunately, there are a few reasons that make this a tough industry in which to invest. First of all, this is a capital intensive industry, meaning a large component[More...]

Earnings Expected to Remain Soft in Second Quarter

The first quarter earnings season is all but over, with just a handful companies having not reported. We can draw a couple of conclusions about the results. First is that there is a serious dichotomy between growth as measured by the median EPS growth rate and as measured by the total net income growth. The median EPS growth rate is fairly healthy, while the total net income reported is sharply below a year ago. More companies are posting positive surprises than disappointments, although the margin is slightly less than we have seen in the past.

Jun. 24--CHESTER -- Speaking in the long shadow of the largest power plant in Virginia, Gov. Timothy M. Kaine announced an initiative Tuesday that takes aim at one of the biggest problems in fighting air pollution -- "grandfathering."

In Virginia, 300 such facilities remain in operation today, still spewing pollutants such as lead, mercury, soot, nitrogen oxide and sulfur dioxide.

On Tuesday, though, Kaine announced a cooperative program that he called the first of its kind in the nation, in which state regulators will work with industry engineers to study specific emissions and other data at 15 of the biggest grandfathered plants, including four in Hampton Roads.
