Long Picks For Monday

The major index charts remain in solid rising trends for now. On a fundamental level, I continue to think this rally has been built on TARP money, short covering, and unrealistic hopes on the economy. Although corporate earnings have exceeded estimates, in the end earnings remain poor. Overbought sectors such as retail, restaurants, real estate, and financials need to contend with a still-deteriorating economic picture. That being the case, I am choosing to remain patient with a majority of short positions while actively trading the long side as long as the rally continues. [More...]

The technology sector has performed better than the broad market recently, which is not saying all that much, but we put together a list of tech stocks that are worth taking a closer look. While some suggest that Tech will lead the market out of the bear market, we are not willing to speculate on that. What I do know is that some of the strongest balance sheets and best growth prospects are in the tech sector. The premise of the Tech 10 is quite simple, using a simple stock screener (in this case Google finance) I separated out these companies largely based on balance sheet strength, and then I crossed the companies with the Ockham valuation framework. In this market many stocks look undervalued compared to historical multiples but only those with great balance sheets can give an appropriate risk/return profile. I think this sector's performance will be scattered all over the board, some companies will do well while others will suffer for a prolonged period of time. So, it's a good sector to sift through, but you have to carefully assess how the overall economic conditions may influence your picks' earnings power. Maxim Integrated a Buy Up to $20 - Analyst Blog

Maxim (MXIM) is an OEM (original equipment manufacturer) of semiconductor analog and mixed signal ICs (integrated chips). Management's preannouncement for Q1 is a 2-8% decline in revenue. The restatement was completed, with a total after-tax impact of -$542.1 million on profit. Management has announced a significant reduction in the capex for 2009, in response to the broad macro-weakness. We are reiterating our Buy rating on MXIM shares, given the diversity in the company's markets, healthy product pipeline and strong cash generating capabilities. We expect the stock to trade higher as the margin issues and macro impact plays out and the company's true potential comes to light. Key Points: The SOX remains in a 14-month slump Chipmakers are dealing with both inventory and demand issues Analysts are cutting forecasts on many semiconductor stocks Highlighted stocks include AMD, INTC, MU, RBCN, and TXN The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (aka "the SOX") is trading at levels not seen in 5 years. Problems within the industry have caused the index to remain in a 14-month slump. Too Much DRAM An ongoing glut of DRAM continues to cast a cloud over the entire industry. Silicon Valley Chip Companies May Face Drawn-Out Economic Recovery

Nov. 3--Despite upbeat pronouncements by Intel about its resurgent sales and evidence the economy finally is growing, the prospects for other chip companies and their thousands of Silicon Valley employees remain unsettlingly murky.
But others fear the sales upsurge in chips may be a mirage based on short-term changes in inventories maintained by computer makers, with a full-fledged, consumer-fueled recovery not likely to happen until after 2011 or even past 2013 for some chip sectors.
"The question is demand," said Michael Palma, a semiconductor specialist at the Framingham, Mass., market-research firm IDC.
