Shipping Industry Stocks: DSX, DRYS, FRO, GNK, NAT, TNP

Perhaps there is no industry more sensitive to global economic activity than the international shipping industry. The financial crisis became a category 5 hurricane last September and blew the entire global shipping industry off course. All sectors of the shipping industry were affected – from oil tankers to dry bulk shippers to container ships. The sudden drying-up of credit, including trade finance, and collapsing trade volumes have changed the industry’s concerns completely. Only a year or so ago the concern in the shipping industry was whether the infrastructure of many countries, especially port facilities, was expanding rapidly enough to handle break-neck growth in shipping traffic volumes. As shipping rates have plunged, the concern now is whether the bottom in the shipping industry has been reached or whether there is further to go on the downside. The good news is that “green shoots” are appearing – again ships are waiting in[More...]

Cramer Gets Behind Fuel Systems Solutions (FSYS) - Again

One of the better earnings report this quarter was from one of our old holdings - Fuel Systems Solutions (FSYS). This was a sort of secondary play on the commodity mania we enjoyed in latter 2007 through summer 2008; they make natural gas fuel systems. We dropped the last portion of our position in September 2008 at $46 with a nearly $23K gain (in our old portfolio in Marketocracy.com) Sometimes we forget what sort of times we lived through in September and October 2008 (20% drop in 1 week on the indexes) and again in mid Jan - early March 2009, but the stock fell as low as $10. <img[More...]

Baltic Dry Index accelerates gains

Yesterday (Wednesday) the Baltic Dry Index (BDI) tacked on 14.6% to close at 1,318. The Capesize (BCI) and Panamax (BPI) indexes gained 13% each. Here is a listing of the three Baltic indices, their recent low and date of low and gain since then: BDI: 663 on 12/05/08, now 1316, +98.5% BCI: 830 on 12/03/08, now 2380, +187% BPI: 442 on 12/11008, now 1000, +126% The indices are now moving upward at a pace comparable to the downward run last fall. It will be interesting to see how long and far this rally carries. My tracking of the dry bulk stocks shows their results continuing to the positive and they average an 8.34% share price gain so far in 2009. On the other side of the shipping world, it appears that rates are definitely softening for the oil tankers. The oil price cantango storage trade is winding down and the OPEC production cuts[More...]

Welcome back from the weekend! As the rest of the market returns from the holiday break, we should see more volume and volatility creep back into stocks. Only tomorrow will tell as to whether or not this is a positive or a negative for stock prices. At the moment, futures prices are trading slightly lower. The Dow is off by 44 points, the S&P down 5 points, and the Nasdaq is down 7 points. Crude oil is up another buck, trading at $47.30. As we talk technicals, take a look at a 5 day chart of the mini S&P futures contract. <img src="http://www.tradingaddicts.com/storage/ES0105.jpg?__SQUARESPACE_CACHEVERSION=1231126533104" alt=""[More...]

Baltic Dry Index Floats Shippers

Baltic Dry Index Floats Shippers The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) is up over 10% to 711 in the past few weeks. It doesn’t mean much, considering it’s down over 93% for the year. In fact, if you consider this move in terms of this summer’s price high of 11,793 - it’s moved barely half a percent. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be keeping an eye on the BDI. The BDI is the price used to determine global shipping rates and prices. Like blood pressure does for humans, BDI measures the flow of goods for the economies of the world. And just like us, excessively low or high readings are bad. Because it isn’t traded, the BDI cannot be moved artificially. It’s one of the best ways to judge the true health of global trade and our economy.
