Interpreting Yesterday's Rally

So I am sitting there, and the market's down around 4%. The S&P had breached the October lows, and I'm loaded with short positions, including a pretty large position in the ultrashort EEV. Then it suddenly occurs to me, everybody's watching this level, including the government. And they have hundred of billions of dollars to buy stocks! I started thinking, if I'm Hank Paulson, I'd be buying hand over fist now to protect the low, maybe put a floor under this market. So I covered a bunch of positions, although unfortunately too few, and what had been a magnificently profitable day turned into something quite mundane. That was some gut-wrenching, exhausting action. So call me a tin-hat conspiracy guy, but I think we would still be dropping if it weren't for the plunge-protection team. Reports for the second quarter are starting to trickle in, and soon that trickle will turn to a flood as Alcoa kicked-off the second quarter earnings season. At this point the reported data is not that significant. Just 32 firms, or 6.40% of the S&P 500, have reported. Nonetheless, this very limited sample is somewhat encouraging. Positive surprises are leading disappointments by a 3.2:1 ratio, inline with recent historical norms. The median surprise is also inline with recent history, and perhaps a bit better than normal at 4.04%. Expect both the surprise ratio and the median surprise to jump around quite a bit in the early going of the earnings season. The median year-over-year EPS growth rate of 9.52% would be wonderful news for the market, if it can be held on to as the season progresses. This week Alcoa (AA) will report and the second-quarter earnings season will be underway in earnest. At this point the reported data is not that significant. To date, just 28 firms within the S&P 500 have reported second-quarter earnings. Though limited in number, the results have been somewhat encouraging. Positive surprises are leading disappointments by a 3.2:1 ratio, inline with recent historical norms. The median surprise is also inline with recent history, and perhaps a bit better than normal at 4.33%. Expect both the surprise ratio and the median surprise to jump around quite a bit in the early going of the earnings season. Noble Energy posts weaker 3Q profit

HOUSTON - Noble Energy Inc. reported sharply lower third-quarter earnings Thursday, as lower commodity prices eroded the oil and gas producer's revenue.
Net income fell to $107 million, or 61 cents per share, for the three months ended in September, down 89 percent from $974 million, or $5.37 per share, during the same period last year.
Excluding special items, including a previously disclosed unrealized commodity derivative loss, net income dropped to $193 million, or $1.10 per share, from $395 million, or $2.08 per share.
