More Cash, Less Debt = Stock Market Gains?

Today there were a couple of posts about how tech stocks are currently especially attractive because they hold plenty of cash and tend to have little debt. Paul Kedrosky initially caught my eye with his post "Tech Cash is King" which in turn pointed me to a story on Bloomberg by Eric Martin. I ran a screen tonight that looked at both cash and debt. Specifically, I screened for a Price-to-Cash ratio under three, a Debt-to-Equity ratio under three and a Market Cap greater than $2.5 million. Based on these criteria, I obtained a list of 136 stocks. Judging from our list, it is absolutely true that many tech stocks do seem to have lots of cash and little debt. Despite the recent commodity-price induced weakness that has helped improve valuation, we are keeping our Hold recommendation unchanged for Hess Corp. (HES) shares at this stage. The near-term outlook for the stock in particular and the overall group in general remains unfavorable. We will revisit our outlook for the stock once early signs of stability emerge in the crude oil market, which we believe will be sooner than later. Tech and bank stocks continue to receive no love, while the commodity stocks continue to top. The rotation, to me, is clearly going into medical and food stocks. I have listed a ton of stocks to be looking to get long and have gone long enough medical stocks that we have enough candidates to watch for possible buy points.However, this doesn’t mean you have to trade. If some of you have not learned from “How to Make Money in Stock” or “Reminiscences of a Stock Operator” that there are times to be long, times to be short, and times to stay away, like now, then I don’t know what to tell you. I am still getting too many questions about stocks from people that are clueless that they are fighting a major freaking battle. Last week General Electric (GE) released good results which met expectations. Infrastructure business unit grew its profit by 26% in forth quarter. This segment makes up 40% of GE total earnings.More than 50 percent of GE revenues now coming from outside the U.S.Still strong global demand and weak USD are major factors which are helping US companies with international focus. NCR acquires kiosk and digital signage firm Netkey

ATM and retail and financial electronics company NCR Corp has acquired kiosk and digital signage software provider Netkey.
East Haven, Connecticut-based Netkey has over 75,000 kiosks and digital signs installed by more than 400 clients in the retail, finance, transportation, and government sectors.
Many of these clients also use NCR's kiosk, self-checkout or point-of-sale applications.
