What's Your Stock's Price Target?

I wrote about this back in February when the market was putting in its lows and everyone was wondering what their stock's price target was or how low it was going to go. Today, after a pretty big run up, people are still wondering what their stock's price target is, but now they're wondering how high it's going to go. Either way, it's important for everyone to know how to calculate their stock's price target. You can do this by using either technicals or fundamentals. Today, I'm going to focus on fundamentals. And we're going to use the P/E ratio to calculate it. Many people use P/E ratios to determine a company's perceived undervaluation or overvaluation. But you can also use the P/E ratio to determine a stock's upside and downside price targets as well.
Every time the United States goes through a recession, the pundits all race to be the first to proclaim that “Buy and Hold” is dead. I can’t watch a financial news channel or read a financial website without some mention of this proclamation. Well I’m growing tired of it, and if it were up to me, I’d prohibit anyone else from making this point for the rest of 2009. Buy and Hold is not dead, and I’m on a mission to prove it. Buy and Hold has worked brilliantly for decades, and it will continue to do so in the future. The stock you bought in 2007 is worth less now than[More...]

Industry Outlook: Metals & Mining Sector

Overview - Neutral OPPORTUNITIES The overall metals industry structure is rather concentrated, with a few producers making a high proportion of sales. There is higher consumption of metals in the Asia-Pacific region, especially China and India. This is due to per capita consumption rising towards U.S./European levels, which could theoretically double metals demand in these regions in the longer-term. There are vastly improved balance sheets with solid liquidity, which is starting to create some merger and acquisition activity, as it is cheaper to buy assets than mine for them. Production cuts of up to 35% are occurring to keep operating rates in the low-80s and keep the market balanced. As of now, this has not had significant positive impact, but it may have kept the market from[More...]

Market Report For Friday: Apr 17, 2009

(7:11am ET) There was plenty of economic data released in the US during the day; however the equity market sidetracked until 2pm ET, when with prices at modest losing levels on the week until that point, suddenly, and for no discernable reason, there was a rally that left the indexes with small gains through Thursday. Perhaps traders were anticipating a positive quarterly report from Google (GOOG +2.4% on +151% of average daily trading volume)? After the close, the company did not disappoint, beating both revenue and EPS estimates. The company posted net income of $1.42 billion ($5.16/share), up +8% from the $1.31 billion ($4.84/share) recorded during the same period a year ago. Revenue for 1Q2009 increased +10% to $4.07 billion, from $3.7 billion, excluding traffic acquisition costs. On average, analysts had expected earnings per share of $4.93 and revenue of $4.08 billion, according to Yahoo Finance.

Sep. 13--The recession has pushed Nevada's casino gambling sector off the cliff, but the state's gold mining industry is still enjoying a wild ride that started when the price of gold hit bottom at $251 an ounce in August 1999.

Since then the price of gold has passed $1,000 an ounce -- three times.

All of that is good news for rural mining towns in Northern Nevada, for the 14,000 direct employees of mines, for businesses that sell goods and equipment to mines and miners, and for gold investors.
