Markets Keep Under Reacting To Dividend Cuts

As part of my long term dividend strategy, I tend to buy and hold a portfolio of several dividend growth stocks. If a company keeps increasing their dividends or at least maintains it, I would keep holding the stock. If the company however decided to cut its payment for whatever reason, I lose confidence in the business model and immediately try to sell my position. Some fellow bloggers do not agree with me on the issue of selling right after a dividend cuts. They believe that the market is efficient, and that negative dividend news is already priced into the stock when the cut is announced.[More...]

Aboitiz Exit From Shipping Business Hits a Snag

May 1--KGLI-NM Holdings Inc., a joint venture between Negros Holdings Management Corp. and KGL Investment BV. of the Netherlands, has backed out of the planned acquisition of the Philippines' largest shipping company, citing its failure to raise ample capital.
In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange, Aboitiz Transport System Corp. (ATSC) said KGLI-NM will no longer proceed with the purchase of $30-million worth of common shares owned by Aboitiz Equity Ventures Inc. (AEV) and Aboitiz & Co. Inc. (ACO) in the shipping firm.
ATSC said KGLI-NM cited the current constraints in the debt markets as the reason for its decision not to push through with its planned purchase of the shares owned by AEV and ACO.

Intrepid Potash Fined $165,000

Mar. 6--CARLSBAD -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Mine Safety and Health Administration has announced it has assessed $165,000 in fines against Intrepid Potash NM in the August 2008 electrocution of a mine shift foreman.
On Aug. 6, 2008, Jeffrey R. Franklin, a shift foreman with 15 years experience, was fatally injured on the surface of the Intrepid Potash East Mine east of Carlsbad when he came into contact with energized parts of a steel water line.
The 38-year-old Franklin contacted conductors for a heat tape that had been installed in a shared conduit body with the conductors of a 480-volt electrical circuit.

Council president Debbie Hurst points out that the four-state Southwest region of Women Business Enterprises generated more than $3.95 billion to the economy last year.

Mining Cleanup Fund Use May Be Broadened

Jan. 11--FARMINGTON -- Hopes are high at U.S. Sen. Jeff Bingaman's, D-NM, office that the administration turnover will enable a change in a policy mandating how New Mexico can use abandoned mine reclamation funds.
The Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 originally collected money from coal producing states to return to the states so they could pay for the clean-up and reclamation of abandoned mining sites.
But because of the way Department of the Interior staffers interpreted the language of a 2006 bill reauthorizing the funds, the money only can be used for the cleanup and restoration of abandoned coal mines.

BRIEF: Anthony Restaurant Downgraded

Jan. 8--LAS CRUCES -- Inspectors with the New Mexico Environment Department have downgraded a southern Dona Ana County restaurant.
Wednesday evening, state officials gave notice that Great American Pizza Works, 880 N. Anthony Dr. in Anthony, NM, was inspected and violations of the state Food Service and Food Processing Regulations were found.
The findings led to a downgrade from "Approved" to "Unsatisfactory" status.
