The company has zeroed in on Brazil as the first manufacturing destination and chosen Claro as its carrier partner in the region. SEOUL, South Korea - Tech-savvy South Koreans began getting their coveted iPhones on Saturday amid fanfare and expectations they will shake up a local market dominated by domestic giants Samsung and LG.
Hundreds of iPhone fans lined up to get the phones at an official launch event in Seoul, some waiting overnight.
South Korean mobile carrier KT Corp., Apple Inc.'s local partner, said up to 1,000 people would receive iPhones at the event.

EU drops Qualcomm antitrust probe

BRUSSELS - European Union antitrust regulators on Tuesday dropped a monopoly abuse probe into wireless chip maker Qualcomm Inc. after mobile phone companies withdrew complaints about high royalty fees.
Broadcom Corp., NEC Corp., Nokia Corp., LM Ericsson, Panasonic Mobile Communications and Texas Instruments Inc. backed off complaints they made in October 2005 that Qualcomm broke agreements among patent holders to keep costs at reasonable levels for key WCDMA patents used in third-generation phones.
Qualcomm's general counsel Don Rosenberg said the company was "extremely pleased" that the four-year EU investigation was over without any charges filed.

Nokia to ax 220 R&D jobs in Japan

HELSINKI - Nokia Corp. said Tuesday it is axing 220 jobs at research and development units in Japan as the world's largest mobile phone maker continues to cut costs.
Last week it announced 330 job cuts in Finland and Denmark at its R&D operations that globally employ 17,000 workers.
The announcement came a month after Nokia reported its first quarterly loss since it became the world's biggest mobile phone maker in 1998.

Ciena to buy Nortel assets, double in size: Purchase of Nortel assets will make it North America's largest fiber-optic networking gear provider

Nov. 24--In an acquisition that will double its size, Ciena Corp. said Monday that it will buy the optical-networking assets of Nortel Networks Corp. for $769 million.
The purchase -- set to close in the first quarter next year -- would make Linthicum-based Ciena the largest provider of fiber-optic networking gear in North America, and the third largest in the world.
"This is a transformational deal, not just for Ciena, but for the industry," said Gary Smith, Ciena's president and chief executive officer.

Ciena Corp. wins bid for Nortel assets in bankruptcy auction

Nov. 23--Ciena Corp., a Linthicum-based maker of fiber optic gear, said Monday that it won a bid for the optical-networking assets of Nortel Networks Corp. in a deal worth $769 million.
The company reportedly beat an unspecified competing bid from Nokia Siemens Networks, a joint venture between Finland's Nokia Corp. and Germany's Siemens AG, during a bankruptcy auction that started Friday and lasted through the weekend, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Ciena agreed to pay $530 million in cash and to issue $239 million in senior convertible notes to Nortel, a Canadian-based company that has filed for bankruptcy protection in both Canada and the United States.

Silicon Image Revises Third Quarter 2009 Revenue Outlook

Silicon Image, Inc.
