Even during the worldwide recession it seems consumers continue to abandon ‘dumb’ phones when, for just a little bit more money, they can get a pocket-sized computer – a smartphone – instead. According to research firm Gartner, overall handset sales are expected to shrink by 4 percent this year compared to last year. Nov. 4--Nokia Siemens Networks announced a reorganization Tuesday that could mean close to 100 job cuts in the Dallas area.
The telecommunications equipment and services joint venture said the possible cuts are part of a global reorganization designed to slice costs by more than $700 million by the end of 2011.
Nokia Siemens has its North American headquarters in Irving, with about 900 employees in the Dallas area and 64,000 globally.

HELSINKI - Nokia Siemens Networks said Tuesday it will lay off up to 5,700 workers globally as part of a move to cut annual costs by euro500 million ($740 million).
The mobile network equipment maker - a joint venture between Finland's Nokia Corp. and Siemens AG of Germany - said it will reduce its five business units to three by January, and strengthen its business through partnerships and acquisitions.
"As our customers make purchasing decisions, they want a partner who engages in issues well beyond a traditional discussion of technology," said Rajeev Suri, the new chief executive officer of Nokia Siemens Networks.

HELSINKI - Nokia Siemens Networks says it will lay off up to 5,700 workers globally as part of a move to cut annual costs by euro500 million ($740 million).
The mobile network equipment maker says it will reorganize units, reduce overheads, expand its portfolio and consider acquisitions "where assets would add scale to existing product areas or customer relationships."
The Finnish-German joint venture owned by mobile phone maker Nokia Corp. and industrial conglomerate Siemens AG has been struggling in the recession.

Alcatel-Lucent Q3 loss widens to $269 million

PARIS - Alcatel-Lucent SA saw its net loss widen in the third quarter as the telecommunications equipment maker lost sales in Europe, its key carrier market.
Alcatel-Lucent, headquartered in Paris and with North American operations based in Murray Hill, New Jersey, said Friday that losses reached euro182 million ($269 million) in the period, more than the euro40 million it lost a year earlier and worse than analysts had forecast.
Earlier this week France Telecom SA, one of Alcatel-Lucent's biggest customers, said it had sharply cut back its capital spending in a bid to conserve cash and focus on reducing its debt.

Silicon Image Revises Third Quarter 2009 Revenue Outlook

Silicon Image, Inc. (NASDAQ: SIMG), a leader in semiconductors and intellectual property for the secure distribution, presentation and storage of high-definition (HD) content, today announced that it expects revenue for fiscal third quarter 2009 to be below the financial guidance previously provided on July 23, 2009.
"We are disappointed to report this revised revenue outlook," said Hal Covert, the Company's president and chief operating officer.
In other news, a separate press release was issued announcing the formation of the Mobile High-Definition Interface Working Group with Nokia Corporation, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd, Silicon Image, Inc., Sony Corporation, and Toshiba Corporation.
