Profit From Dwindling Oil Supplies

The world may be headed for a catastrophic energy crunch that could cripple a global economic recovery because most of the major oil fields in the world have passed their peak production. The scenario may come true according to Dr. Fatih Birol, the chief energy economist at the respected International Energy Agency (IEA). The IEA is charged with the task of assessing future global energy supplies by countries of the OECD – Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. Recently, the IEA conducted the first-ever assessment of the world’s major 800 oil fields, which cover three quarters of global reserves.[More...]

National Oilwell Varco Earnings

National Oilwell Varco (NOV) released pretty solid earnings this morning. This is a company that I've owned a couple of different times, and I like their diversity in the oil space. They are an oil services company that serves offshore platforms (the main reason I liked them in the first place) amongst other areas. Here's their results (via Market Watch): National Oilwell Varco said Tuesday its second-quarter net income fell a less-than-forecast 28% as its rig technology business held steady despite a downturn in the oil service business. National Oilwell Varco earned $220 million, or 53 cents a share, compared to $421 million, or $1.05 a share, in the year-ago period. Revenue was virtually flat at about $1.9 billion.<br[More...]

Let me preface this piece by saying I stole this specific instrument from Jeffrey Saut, who mentioned it in his weekly missive. Long time readers will know I've mentioned this market has become all about asset allocation, and sectors - I noticed this late in 2007 when we were hiding out in commodities while many other sectors were imploding but other than a few periods when "everything" is going down (or up) it appears a lot of individual stock selection is going out the window and "sectors" are more important. Some themes are broad like "China" or "commodities" (which in many ways are now the same theme), where others are narrower such as "casual dining restaurants". I don't know if its the dominance of program trading or the growing popularity of ETFs but this seems to be a secular change in the[More...]

OIL INDUSTRY EARNINGS: Local Firms to Feel Pinch As BP Tries to Reduce Costs

Jul. 29--British oil giant BP said Tuesday it will try to reduce costs further this year, particularly within its vast supply chain, amid tough business conditions it doesn't see improving greatly in 2009.

Going forward, cost-cutting will focus less on the internal business and more on BP's network of product and service suppliers, which BP believes are still charging too much despite sharply lower oil and gas prices from a year ago, BP Group Chief Executive Tony Hayward said.

"We've not really begun to get costs in the supply chain back to where they need to be for a $60 (crude oil) world," Hayward said in a conference call Tuesday to discuss the company's second quarter financial results.

May 5--A year ago, with oil prices above $100 and the economy still growing, Houston's Offshore Technology Conference reflected the swagger and optimism of one of the biggest booms ever for the oil and gas industry.

At this year's event, the scene is different.

As one speaker put it in a panel discussion Monday, the industry's onward-and-upward spirit of the past several years has been "shattered."
