54 Stocks Returning 15%+ in January

As we exit the worst January ever, I thought it would be interesting to take a look at the best performers of the past month. Before we do, courtesy of Dshort.com this is a chart that has been passed around a lot in the investing community so I thought I'd share it. Two ways to read this - of the 4 great bear markets the past 100 years, 3 "ended" roughly where we are now... about a 50% loss in value from peak. That's the bullish view i.e. "can't get worse than this" and if we fall to S&P 750 (November lows) but never break through they will be correct. The bearish view is - the 4th bear market ended in a 90% drop, and if you plot the velocity of the decline, what happened to us in Sep - Nov caused us to be in lockstep with the worst of the 4. I'm not calling for a 90% drop[More...]

Busy Week for Dividend Increases

As more and more large cap companies unveiled their results, there were many dividend announcements as well. Other large cap companies such as Intel, Microsoft, IBM and Google released quarterly results and provided guidance for future quarters. Other companies such as Bank of America set a negative tone with their most recent dividend cut, while others like General Electric provided reassurance that their dividend and triple A rating are safe and will be maintained. Despite the negative news several notable dividend increases occurred over the past week. This has been the most dividend increases I have seen since I began reviewing weekly changes in dividend policies for US publicly traded entities in 2008.
Watching Dow 8,000

The Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DJI) was back below 8,000 this morning. This is the third consecutive day that the blue-chip average has traded below 8,000. Previous drops below this level have been followed by large upward moves. Should a rebound fail to occur, the danger that the blue-chip average could drop to new lows significantly increases. Trading ranges hold until they don't, and the risks of downside breakout are rising. There is a rational reason for the current weakness. Fourth-quarter earnings have been lousy, the problems in the banking sector are not getting solved and visibility is lacking. <P[More...]
