The Meek Continue To Dominate Equities

Early in April after a month long run off the bottom I posted a list of equities that gained at least 60% in the preceding 4 weeks (Apr 5: The Meek Shall Inherit the Earth: 92 Stocks Over $10 Returning 60%+) The list was a whose who of beaten down merchandise. Generally, by week 4-5 of an oversold rally these type of names begin to peter out but the ramp has been relentless in lower quality, low price stocks. My gut tells me quant (and other varieties) of hedge funds have been shorting these names, using fundamental reasons - expecting some pullback after huge runs - only to be run over again and again even in week 6 and 7 of this rally. All it takes nowadays is saying "business has stabilized at the worst levels we've seen in decades" to elicit glee and massive short covering rallies.
More Cash, Less Debt = Stock Market Gains?

Today there were a couple of posts about how tech stocks are currently especially attractive because they hold plenty of cash and tend to have little debt. Paul Kedrosky initially caught my eye with his post "Tech Cash is King" which in turn pointed me to a story on Bloomberg by Eric Martin. I ran a screen tonight that looked at both cash and debt. Specifically, I screened for a Price-to-Cash ratio under three, a Debt-to-Equity ratio under three and a Market Cap greater than $2.5 million. Based on these criteria, I obtained a list of 136 stocks. Judging from our list, it is absolutely true that many tech stocks do seem to have lots of cash and little debt. What also became apparent as I went through the list is that there[More...]

Keep An Eye on XLF, XHB, XLY and XLE for Rally Strength

We discussed about the VIX and I gave my opinion that the market could turn last week. For the last few days, we've been seeing rallies in the market, especially in the weak oversold sectors like Financials, Homebuilders and Consumer Discretionary. We've also seen continued sell-off in Coal and Steel sectors after brief spell of consolidation. As I said on 9 Jul, watch for a retest to go short or get some Put Options. It retested and broke down again last week, hope you caught some of the action. What about the week ahead? The major trend is still to the downside and watch for resistance at 1270 for the S&P 500 index. Also watch the Financials (XLF), Homebuilders (XHB), Consumer Discretionary (XLY) and Energy (XLE)[More...]

Cisco breaking $27 support intraday, though I’m staying long

I’ve recently bought a couple lots of Cisco (CSCO) from $27.50 to $29.50, thinking that I had near term support at $27. As of this writing, CSCO has broken through the $27 level, and now sits near $26.25, which surprised me. Normally, you’re supposed to sell when a stock breaks a support level, but I’m thinking of this as a long term position (at least one year), so I won’t try to sell it and pick it up cheaper.I had thought that the sell off from $34, after their last earnings announcement where they beat their quarterly number but the stock sold off 10% nonetheless, was overdone and that the $27 to $29 range represented a good buying opportunity.<img style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px" height="432" src="http://zenrob.com/wp-conten[More...]

So a user could watch a home video on YouTube, an episode of "Fringe" from Hollywood studio-backed Hulu or even a video report from the Mercury News Web site.

Few living room devices available today have access to that range of content, and those that do typically cost far more than the SlingCatcher.

Given this, we are pleased to achieve net revenue of $144.7 million, especially in light of the worldwide macroeconomic downturn, while at the same time reducing our 'on-hand' and our distribution channels' inventory levels. Our net revenue from service providers was approximately 30% of total net revenue, as compared to 27% in the second quarter of 2008, and 27% in the first quarter of 2009. In addition, we are excited to have added Megacable of Mexico to our service provider customer list in the second quarter of 2009.''We are keeping pace with our expectations in new product introductions and announced 12 new products in the second quarter. Among the notable launches, we introduced Stackable Power over Ethernet Smart Switches, High Performance Rackmount ReadyNAS network storage, Home Theater Powerline / Ethernet Connection Kit, and wireless router and DSL gateways for the Asian and African markets. We continue to focus on product development and will continue to launch new products. We intend to introduce another 12-15 new products in the third quarter in order to distance NETGEAR from our competition in technology and product leadership.'Christine Gorjanc, Chief Financial Officer of NETGEAR, said, 'We ended the second quarter of 2009 with $224.5 million in cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments, compared to $200.3 million at the end of the first quarter of 2009, and $186.8 million at the end of the second quarter of 2008. Our net inventory ended at $75.0 million, compared to $92.0 million at the end of the first quarter of 2009 and $106.4 million at the end of the second quarter of 2008. We are also pleased to announce that our current year-to-date operating expense cost reductions is approximately $6.6 million, as compared to our total 2009 operating expense cost reduction target of $10.0 million, which was based on our annualized fourth quarter 2008 run rate.' Net revenue by geography comprises gross revenue less items such as marketing incentives paid to customers, sales returns and price protection. The following table shows net revenue by geography for the periods indicated: Net revenue by geography:[More...]
