Early in April after a month long run off the bottom I posted a list of equities that gained at least 60% in the preceding 4 weeks (Apr 5: The Meek Shall Inherit the Earth: 92 Stocks Over $10 Returning 60%+) The list was a whose who of beaten down merchandise. Generally, by week 4-5 of an oversold rally these type of names begin to peter out but the ramp has been relentless in lower quality, low price stocks. My gut tells me quant (and other varieties) of hedge funds have been shorting these names, using fundamental reasons - expecting some pullback after huge runs - only to be run over again and again even in week 6 and 7 of this rally. I am starting to get interested in building a larger position here in NuVasive (NUVA) here around mid $31s as the stock knives lower; however the volume is very extreme (half of daily volume traded in first hour) so I am curious what is driving the selling. Yesterday Medtronic (MDT) had a disappointing report but they only compete in the spine area - there is a news report that the feds are investigating off label use of a Medtronic spinal implant - I don't know about this product in relation to NuVasive's product line to know if this is the cause... Screening through charts of positions, there are a few names now back over their 20, 50, and 200 day moving averages - NuVasive (NUVA) is one. I don't see any news in particular but a nice article in Investors Business Daily from late October I thought I'd bring here; I always like their stories because they usually can explain some more complicated fundamental stories in "layman's terms". The stock market action (aside from yesterday) continues to be "student body left" or "student body right" - everything is good or everything is bad trading. While it feels better to the upside then downside, it is not really an investing atmosphere when individual stocks continue to not differentiate and everything has to be either bought or sold en masse. NuVasive (NUVA) Earnings

NuVasive (NUVA) reported earnings last evening, and with all the 1x charges I have no idea how to compare to analysts expectations. Usually analyst expectations are on a non GAAP charges, but if so this means NuVasive reported a 21 cent quarter versus 1 cent expectation - so something seems amiss in the analyst expectations (they must include some of the one time charges). Another small healthcare company who raised guidance... we continue to focus on these companies that are executing - the market could care less. There were some very interesting smaller cap earnings plays last week as I reviewed some of the largest movers in that space. Don't have time to get to them all via blog, but my watch list has been growing - "unfortunately" most of them had tremendous moves up post earnings so the question one always asks in these instance "to chase or not to the chase?".
