The markets ended September with a big decline in the major indexes. Last week the volatility of the past month continued as stocks traded like a yo-yo – falling 777 points after congress failed to approve the 700 billion dollar bailout, and then rising 500 points before hitting new 52 week lows by the end of the week after the bailout was approved. There was some negative dividend news from S&P that there were 138 dividend cuts or suspensions in the third quarter while 346 issues increased their payments to shareholders. Most of the dividend cuts were in the financial sector. Standard and poors reported the following:“It was the worst September for dividends since[More...]

Nov. 4--Despite the economic slowdown's depressing effect on customer demand, Northwest Natural Gas Co. has been able to boost profits this year by purchasing gas for far less than it forecasted last fall.

The utility says its commodity costs are a strict, dollar-for-dollar pass-through to customers on which it makes no markup.

The difference may seem semantic, but regulators believe the sharing mechanism is an incentive to buy gas judiciously.

Portland Harbor Contamination Poses Risk to Humans, Environment, Study Shows

Oct. 26--Decades of industrial pollution in the Portland Harbor Superfund site have left high levels of contaminants in river sediment, an exhaustive survey concludes, posing risks to wildlife, fish and humans who eat fish from the nine-mile stretch of the Willamette River.

The report, due to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency this week, catalogs the results of more than 6,000 sediment and water samples and tests of fish and shellfish tissue conducted over eight years at a cost of $74 million.

It's the biggest step toward cleanup since the EPA declared the harbor a Superfund site in 2000, pinpointing where the concentrations and risks of toxic contaminants are highest -- the numbers needed to plan what's likely to be the most expensive restoration project in Oregon's history.

Sep. 12--Despite earlier cleanup efforts, extensive Willamette River contamination remains from two properties in the heart of the Portland harbor Superfund site, an analysis by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says.

The pollution from the two sites -- owned by Northwest Natural Gas Co. and Siltronic Corp. -- could cost $30 million to $75 million to clean up, Sean Sheldrake, an EPA project manager, estimated in a memo this week.

For one key carcinogen, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, the river pollution is the highest measured in the Superfund site and up to 100 times above guidelines for river sediment, Sheldrake's memo says.
