ETFs (Exchange Traded Funds) was launched in 1993 with introduction of SPDRs (ticker: SPY) that tracks the S&P 500 index. Still SPDRs remains as one of the most traded stock (not just exchange traded funds) on the U.S. stock market. ETFs should always be look at as funds that could be traded as. To see advantages of ETFs trading the one should compare them to mutual funds trading first and then to stock trading. Betting On Government Relief Stocks: A Real Bad Idea

Established on January 5, 2009, the NASDAQ OMX government relief index that tracks companies that are participating in the US government's financial relief plan (symbol: QGRI) is down 36% since inception. The US Treasury is in the process of becoming the proud owner of some 36% of Citigroup's common stock, after pouring some $45 billion into the company. Analysts say the U.S. government’s third attempt to help rescue Citigroup Inc. won’t stanch the company’s losses, which will continue to swell and may lead the bank to require more money in coming months. Investors that have stuck with Citigroup on the hope that government intervention would turn around the company have lost some 97% of their investment since the peak in the stock in 2007. How about a double short on the NASDAQ OMX government relief index? The pattern for AIG is the same. Staples Inc. (SPLS: 17.951, +0.011 (+0.06%)) announced third quarter earnings before the bell on Tuesday as shares made strong gains in morning trading. Even as consumers continue to cut back on discretionary spending, the world’s largest office products company surprised investors with earnings per share coming in at 42 cents versus Wall Street’s estimates of 41 cents. In short, it looks as if the "Smart Money" is beginning to accumulate stocks again. The "Smart Money" is flies in like a stealth bomber, unannounced, quiet, but you know there around dropping bombs of money here and there. Keep an eye on IBM which pre-announced and reaffirmed its full-year outlook. GE could be a different story. Nov. 29--Dear Action Line: I know "all sales are final" regarding holiday sales, but some merchants have more liberal return policies than others as an incentive to shop there.
The staff of ShopSmart magazine, put out by Consumer Reports' publisher Consumers Union, researched the return policies of 88 popular online and on-ground retailers and reveals the best and the worst in its December issue.
It reviewed time limits, restrictions on the types and sizes of products accepted for return, restocking fees, etc.
