ETFs (Exchange Traded Funds) was launched in 1993 with introduction of SPDRs (ticker: SPY) that tracks the S&P 500 index. Still SPDRs remains as one of the most traded stock (not just exchange traded funds) on the U.S. stock market. ETFs should always be look at as funds that could be traded as. To see advantages of ETFs trading the one should compare them to mutual funds trading first and then to stock trading. By comparing ETFs to the mutual funds we may that: Intraday Trading: Mutual funds are always traded at the market close once a day and no matter when you place order to buy/sell mutual fund your order will be filled at the same time (at market close) and at the same price as orders of all other investors. Exchange traded funds could be traded as stock and you can purchase or sell them during the market trading hours.
Betting On Government Relief Stocks: A Real Bad Idea

Established on January 5, 2009, the NASDAQ OMX government relief index that tracks companies that are participating in the US government's financial relief plan (symbol: QGRI) is down 36% since inception. The US Treasury is in the process of becoming the proud owner of some 36% of Citigroup's common stock, after pouring some $45 billion into the company. Analysts say the U.S. government’s third attempt to help rescue Citigroup Inc. won’t stanch the company’s losses, which will continue to swell and may lead the bank to require more money in coming months. Investors that have stuck with Citigroup on the hope that government intervention would turn around the company have lost some 97% of their investment since the peak in the stock in 2007. How about a double short on the NASDAQ OMX government relief index? The pattern for AIG is the same. CNN, in an article called "The Bailout that Won't Quit" pointed out that AIG has already blown through the $152.2[More...]

In short, it looks as if the "Smart Money" is beginning to accumulate stocks again. The "Smart Money" is flies in like a stealth bomber, unannounced, quiet, but you know there around dropping bombs of money here and there. Keep an eye on IBM which pre-announced and reaffirmed its full-year outlook. GE could be a different story. Yesterday's wild swings caused the DJIA to go from positive to negative before giving way to a late day sell-off. The volume was impressive as the NYSE traded 2 billion shares, while the NASDAQ traded 3.5 billion. Redemption's and forced liquidation from hedge funds and mutual funds was evident, which added fuel to yesterday's[More...]

Teachers continue to pay the price for tighter school budgets - literally. Faced with a lack of necessary classroom supplies, teachers across the country pay for these supplies with their own money. This October 6, OfficeMax Incorporated , a leader in office products and services, will again join with Adopt-A-Classroom to surprise and honor teachers across the country for the annual 'A Day Made Better' event in an effort to raise awareness about the widespread problem of teacher-funded classrooms. This year's 'A Day Made Better' cause event will be hosted on October 6, 2009 when OfficeMax associates will visit approximately 1,000 public schools to surprise about 1,000 teachers each with a gift of classroom supplies worth approximately $1,000.[More...]
