Oppenheimer (NYSE:OPY): Stock Sales Buoy Investment Banks

According to Oppenheimer (OPY) bank analyst Chris Kotowski, who took over when famed analyst Meredith Whitney started her own firm, companies selling stock to raise capital will be a boon to investment banks in the second quarter. Kotowski’s estimates that U.S. firms sold about $122.6 billion worth of stock in the quarter, about 9 times greater than the previous quarter and twice the quarterly average since 2005. Obviously, this is great news for investment banks as the fees associated with these secondary offerings will boost investment banking revenue beyond where it was in the first quarter. The Bear here is Meredith Whitney, who says that bank stocks will return to negative earnings in the second quarter. That’s a big and very specific call that is very much out of line with the consensus. Kenexa (NASDAQ:KNXA) may be on the move today after posting results last night and getting upgraded at Oppenheimer and Keybanc: - Oppenheimer is taking their rating to Outperform and introducing a $12 PT as they are growing increasingly confident that the company's business is at or near a bottom. Overall, while 1Q results were largely in line with its forecast, they believe parts of its business are showing early signs of improvement. Though the RPO business will likely remain a ST drag, the LT upside potential is far too significant to ignore. At current levels, KNXA trades at just 1.0x CY09E recurring revs, below the SaaS group average of 2.5x. I'm pressed for time nowadays, so I thought from time to time I'd bring on some guest bloggers who have similar thought processes to myself so that the content is similar but I can begin to sleep for more than 3 hours a night. Earnings season is especially tough since there is so much information to assimilate in a short period of time. As I wrote coming into the week, I take what the companies are reporting (not "versus analysts expectations" but in a vacuum, quarter over quarter and year over year) as a much more important signal than any government report; most of which are highly flawed. (8:25am ET) The main focus of traders today will be the 1Q2009 earnings report from JP Morgan (JPM), and the close scrutiny of the data and hype that will follow. After hitting a low of $14.93 in early March, JPM has rallied +118.1% to yesterday’s close of $32.56. CIBC Announces Third Quarter 2009 Results

TORONTO, Aug. 26 /CNW/ - CIBC (CM: TSX; NYSE) announced net income of $434 million for the third quarter ended July 31, 2009, compared with net income of $71 million for the same period last year.
Cash diluted earnings per share were $1.04(1), compared with $0.13(1) a year ago.
CIBC's Tier 1 and total capital ratios at July 31, 2009 remain strong, at 12.0% and 16.5%, respectively.
