Geothermal Getting Some Press

A piece about geothermal energy made the NY times yesterday, and is an interesting read. It basically says that geothermal is starting to show up on the radar in Washington. This to me will be the most important factor in becoming a major part of our new energy plan. Will Washington step up and come up with a plan that can work? We can sit and debate cap-and-trade all day long, but in the end, there will be little we can do about it. I'd rather make a plan on how to make a profit with the bill that comes through. Earnings/Follow Up Commentary

I wanted to follow up on the earnings results and subsequent market reaction of a couple of names I was watching. First, Advanced Battery Technologies (ABAT). I've never held any positions in this, and it caught my eye purely because of last weeks 1 million share buy by their CEO, just before earnings. The market was thinking the same thing I was apparently. The stock shot up to end the week, and after the results, it sold off. The earnings were fine, but no blowout like many thought possible. I do like their product (lithium ion battery sales-mostly in China), and their balance sheet (solid amount of cash for a company of its size). On the technical side, there is little support near current levels, and the stock could fall a bit more. I may look at buying it if it gets back to the 2.50-3.00 range. Welcome back from the weekend! As the rest of the market returns from the holiday break, we should see more volume and volatility creep back into stocks. Only tomorrow will tell as to whether or not this is a positive or a negative for stock prices. At the moment, futures prices are trading slightly lower. The Dow is off by 44 points, the S&P down 5 points, and the Nasdaq is down 7 points. Crude oil is up another buck, trading at $47.30. Obama's Economic Stimulus Plan

There's been a lot of talk about Obama's new economic stimulus plan. The word "infrastructure" keeps getting thrown around, and I think its getting misinterpreted. Because we keep hearing infrastructure, every stock in that space is getting a pretty good bump. Here are some of his words: "Hence Mr. Obama's emphasis over the weekend on spending on "infrastructure" -- build roads, modernize schools, expand Internet access, improve buildings' energy efficiency, put better technology in hospitals." "The need for a big economic jolt means "we can't worry short term about the deficit," Mr. Obama said on NBC's "Meet the Press." Ormat Technologies acquires interest in geothermal power projects in Nevada

Ormat Technologies has said that its wholly owned subsidiary, Ormat Nevada, has acquired all of the class B membership interests in OPC held by Lehman-OPC, an affiliate of Lehman Brothers, for a purchase price of $18.5 million.
OPC was initially established by Ormat Nevada to hold its Desert Peak 2, Steamboat Hills, Galena 2, and Galena 3 geothermal power projects (all located in Nevada) jointly with Morgan Stanley Geothermal, an affiliate of Morgan Stanley, and Lehman-OPC as institutional equity investors.
The purchase from Lehman-OPC of all of its class B membership interests was concluded pursuant to a right of first offer in favor of each of the members of OPC under its limited liability company agreement.
