The New Investment Manifesto

Mike Price sends: My opinions on investment and the world have changed so dramatically over the past twelve months that I have decided to divide my investment ‘philosophy,’ into two separate sections I think it’s fitting to start this new manifesto at the apex of the former section. My investment career up ‘til this point had been full of disappointments and hypocrisy, I read and wrote about the virtue of doing your own work and investing, not speculating; but all this time I borrowed ideas from others and rarely did the amount of work necessary to justify taking a position. This had all started to change after I stopped working as much and was able to plow all the excess time into investing, to great result (unfortunately the result for my physique was the opposite).[More...]

When I start seeing stocks featured in Investors Business Daily, I start to sweat - usually marks the near term top as the retail trader has piled in. (Un?)fortunately, Priceline.com (PCLN) seems to have made the cut after its recent earnings... I do like IBD's stories because they explain companies backgrounds in very easy to read format. And PCLN is not exactly a hidden small or mid cap player ... We did start this position yesterday with a small stake - to go along with a very healthy chart but I am hoping for some weakness to build this position up at lower valuations. As mentioned yesterday the 20 day moving average was $98 so we got the dip there this morning,[More...]

WSJ: Short Sellers Squeezed All Around

Part of this article in the Wall Street Journal is about the steps taken to "take back" land from the short sellers; that is not the part I am concerned with. What I simply hate(d) as an investor in mid cap and some small cap stocks was the complete lack of attention the SEC paid to naked short selling. Short selling on its own is a positive; but naked short selling (selling shares that don't even exist) is essentially a fraud. The reality is many of the big players whose prime broker were the Merrill Lynchs, Goldman Sachs, Lehman Brothers of the world - engaged in this. When pressed on this, the brokerages (and their institutional buddies) insisted its an overblown issue... certainly very rarely did a hedgie sit day after day shooting against a defenseless small cap stock as its personal plaything. Nope - all in your imagination folks. Finally the SEC decided to step up to the plate .... why you might ask? Because the tables got turned on the[More...]

Retail Industry : Industry Outlook

In February, we've seen several retailers deliver better-than-expected results for the fourth quarter. That resulted in some eye-popping one-day gains of 10%, 20% and even 30%. In most cases, the upside was due to extremely low investor expectations associated with the 2008 holiday season and not an improvement in their underlying business. Despite the positive reaction to retail earnings reports, we remain negative on the retail industry. Our negative view of the group is based on the weak economic environment, higher savings rates and de-leveraging in the financial system. These factors all point to continued pressure on consumer spending. The weak economy has caused many to lose their jobs, while many others live in fear of losing theirs. This elevated level of fear is causing many consumers to cut back on purchases and look for ways to save on the purchases they do make. Consumers have also experienced a great deal of[More...]

From November 20, 2008 to January 6, 2009, the S&P Retail Index (RLX) rose 41%. Not a bad move for a group of stocks that had one of the worst holiday shopping seasons in recent memory. It appears that investors became more bullish on retailers because of seemingly cheap valuations, anticipated benefits from a federal government stimulus package, and a better economy in the second half of 2009. In our view, the 50-day upward move in retail stocks was a bear-market rally. Investors should begin to lighten up on exposure to retail stocks. We expect the group to give back those gains as it becomes apparent that many retail stocks are not cheap, that the stimulus will provide at best a short-term boost, and the economy will not turn until 2010. Our negative view of the group is based on the awful 2008 holiday season, a reduction of leverage in the financial system and, most importantly, consumer attitudes shifting away from borrowing to[More...]

Not Too Early for "Bah, Humbug!" - Zacks Analyst Interviews

In normal times, getting to the end of October means the retail industry can start looking forward to sales over the holiday shopping season. These are not normal times. Helping us sort out what retail stocks may have to offer, we spoke with Zacks senior analyst Rob Plaza, CFA recently. With the extensive sell-off we've been seeing in the last few trading days, are stocks within the retail industry at all beginning to look attractive? Despite the apparent values in retail stocks, there are few reasons to get excited about the retailers. Consumer spending will remain subdued for the next few quarters, and that will lead to retailers' earnings estimates declining for the next several months. How much of this is due to holiday season trepidation? The holidays are right[More...]

Overstock.com - Bear of the Day

Overstock is an online closeout retailer, offering discount, brand-name merchandise for sale primarily over the Internet. Its merchandise offerings include: CDs, DVDs, magazines, and books, music, videos and games (BMV); as well as bed and bath goods, kitchenware, watches, jewelry, electronics, sporting goods, and designer accessories. We remain negative on OSTK shares. The company's business model is flawed. Its gross margin is not large enough to support its operating cost structure. What's more, competitive pressures are increasing in the e-commerce space, and Overstock.com doesn't stack up to larger and better-run companies in online retail. And with the economy weakening further, consumers are becoming increasingly reluctant to spend money on discretionary purchases. As a result, we are reducing estimates for 2008 and 2009. We believe it is likely that the company will report disappointing results for the third quarter and warn that the[More...]
