Why Is Goldman Reportedly On Track To Pay Record Or Near-Record Bonuses This Year?

Yves Smith returned from book-writing land to catch up on the Andrew Hall story, which is one that I pretty much decided to ignore from the beginning. Hall is the Citigroup trader who, according to his compensation agreement, was due a $100 million bonus. The bonus was so big because Hall and his team were due 30% of the profits from their trades, which is even more than typical hedge fund fees. (This tradition of particular trading groups negotiating a share of their profits dates back at least to Salomon in its heyday; AIG Financial Products also had this type of deal.)[More...]

BAGHDAD - A consortium grouping U.S. and European oil giants Exxon Mobil Corp. and Royal Dutch Shell PLC won the right to develop one of Iraq's most prized oil fields, Iraq's Oil Ministry spokesman said on Thursday, as the OPEC nation looks to revamp its battered energy sector.

The deal to develop the 8.6 million West Qurna Stage 1 field is the third such agreement in less than a week between a foreign oil consortium and Iraq, which sorely needs foreign company expertise and funding to revive an oil sector hammered by years of neglect, sanctions and, most recently sabotage.

Assem Jihad told The Associated Press the West Qurna deal will be initialed later in the day, and would then be forwarded to the Cabinet for approval.

Jury Awards $9.6 Million to Worker Injured in Industrial Accident, According to Arnold & Itkin LLP

An industrial worker who suffered severe eye damage after he was doused in acid in an April 2006 workplace accident has been awarded $9.6 million by a Houston jury, according to Arnold & Itkin LLP, the Houston law firm that represents the worker. The jury in the 295th State District Court of Harris County found Dallas-based Occidental Chemical Corp., a unit of Occidental Petroleum Corp. , negligently designed the acid addition system to which Equistar Chemicals L.P. worker Jason Jenkins was adding acid at the Lyondell Bayport facility when the accident occurred.Jenkins, who lost most of his vision in one eye, alleged that Occidental's system lacked a pressure indicator and it failed to properly vent pressure to prevent worker injury. The faulty design vented pressure near Jenkins' face, according to trial evidence. Occidental denied the allegations.Kurt Arnold, Jason Itkin and Michael Pierce, of Arnold & Itkin LLP's Houston office, represent Mr. Jenkins.Kurt Arnold stated, "Jason Jenkins' workplace injury was preventable. We are very pleased with the jury's findings, particularly since the defendants refused to accept any responsibility for this incident, even though a safer alternative design was available when the system was designed. We hope and pray that a successful resolution of this case will help Jason Jenkins and his family address his injuries and move ahead with their lives."The trial in Judge Tracy Christopher's court lasted more than two weeks, but the jury only deliberated for a day and a half before returning the verdict that found Occidental 75 percent responsible, Equistar 20 percent responsible and Jenkins five percent responsible. The case is "Jason Jenkins v. Occidental Chemical," Cause No. 2007-73468, in the 295th District Court of Harris County, Texas.Contact: Kurt Arnold, Arnold & Itkin LLP, 1401 McKinney Street, Suite 2550, Houston, Texas 77010, 222-3800, www.arnolditkin.com.[More...]
