The markets were off today as the Dow Jones Industrial Average was the only major index to be in the black, up 0.15% to a level of 8,763.13. The NASDAQ was down 0.03% closing at 1849.42 while the S&P 500 was down 0.25% ending at 940.09. The 10-year once again saw price down ending with a yield of 3.83%. A dollar gained strength today resulting with gold falling, settling at $962.60, and weaker demand saw crude prices fall to $68.44 a barrel. In the reported 2008 second quarter, Penske Automotive Group's (PAG) earnings from continuing operations per diluted share were $0.42, down from $0.43 in the year-ago period. Revenue was steady at $3.4 billion. Same-store sales decreased 6% on new vehicles down 8% and used vehicles up 7%. The Company currently projects earnings from continuing operations for the year to be in the range of $1.54 to $1.60. Penske is well positioned among the auto retailer peer group. Its specialty and luxury product mix offers opportunity for long-term growth. Additionally, we are encouraged by positive same-store sales in used vehicles. However, rising interest rates, challenging industry conditions and a leveraged balance sheet dampen our outlook on the stock. Thus, we rate the shares a Hold with a six-month target price of $14.00. TC PipeLines, L.P.'s (TCLP) second-quarter earnings, while on the lower side relative to our estimates, were above year-earlier levels. The year-over-year increase resulted from higher transmission revenue, lower financial charges and increased equity income from Great Lakes, partially offset by a fall in equity income from Northern Border. Importantly, TCLP raised its quarterly distribution by 7.6% year-over-year to the annualized rate of $2.82 per unit. We continue to like the partnership for the potential addition of quality assets to the partnership's portfolio over the next few quarters from its general partner.
