Who’s Benefiting From The Dollar's Demise?

The dollar is out as the world’s predominant reserve currency. Central banks around the world increased their foreign currency holdings by $413 billion in the second quarter, the most since at least 2003, according to data compiled by Bloomberg News. But 63% of that new cash was put into currencies other than the dollar. That’s a record-high percentage for any quarter with more than an $80 billion increase in holdings.[More...]

Petrobras (PBR) - Still A Sure Thing?

I've often said to people the rate of change in this world is such that there are very few companies outside of the Johnson & Johnson's (JNJ) or Procter & Gamble's (PG) that you can buy and forget about for a decade. And the high(er) growth era for those type of stocks are long gone. One name I touted in 2007, and 2008 as a stock you could buy, go on a 10 year cruise and come back to was Brazilian oil giant Petrobras (PBR). I thought this was the next Exxon (XOM) or in fact better since it's almost like buying a Brazilian version of a Saudi Arabian energy conglomerate.[More...]

Petrobras (PBR) New Oil Discovery

Petroleo Brasilerio, also known as Petrobras (PBR), found light crude in reserves situated in the Campos Basin off the coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro. The discovery was made by drilling well 1-BRSA-713-RJS (1-RJS-661) in Exploratory Concession BM-C-36 (block C-M-401). This block is exclusively operated by Petrobras. Preliminary analysis indicates that the Campos Basin has recoverable volumes of 280 million barrels of light oil. Geologically similar reservoirs had already been identified in the Santos Basin by drilling two wells in the Marlin Sul field. These discoveries are a result of the efforts and the modern technology that the company has been using in other production areas.? Oct. 30--Manila Electric Co.'s (Meralco) net income posted significant gains in the first nine months of the year as the company continues to reap the benefits from its new rate-setting scheme.
In its unaudited financial report, the country's largest distribution utility reported a net income of P5.3 billion for the first three quarters, up 41.7 percent from P3.8 billion a year ago.
The increase was attributed to the implementation of its performance-based regulation (PBR) rate-setting scheme in May.

'Giant Discovery' Sends BP's Shares Soaring

Sep. 2--Oil major BP today reported a "giant discovery" in the Gulf of Mexico sending its shares to a new high for the year.
The firm struck it rich at the Tiber Prospect about 250 miles south east of Houston in which it has a 62 percent stake.
Shares jumped nearly 4 percent or 19.8p to 539.3p -- their highest since the start of the year -- as investors cheered the find which will give BP access to much-needed oil reserves for years to come.

Meralco Seeks Higher Charges for Next Year

Aug. 11--AFTER enjoying four straight months of cheap power from its suppliers, Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) wants to jack up its distribution charge under its new rate-setting regime.
In a petition lodged before the Energy Regulatory Commission on Saturday, Meralco is seeking a new average distribution, supply and metering rate of P1.49 per kilowatt-hour.
Ivanna de la Pena, Meralco vice president and utility economics head, said the proposed adjustment, which will still undergo public hearings at the ERC, covers the utility's maximum average price for its 2010 regulatory year that runs from July 2009 to June 2010.

New Rate Schem Lifts Meralco Profit

Aug. 4--Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) said its profit grew nearly a fifth in the first six months of the year mainly due to a new rate-setting scheme.
In a statement to the Philippine Stock Exchange, the country's largest electricity distributor reported a 19.20-percent increase in its net income to P3.16 billion from P2.65 billion last year.
Meralco's franchise area covers 4.63 million customers in Metro Manila and outlying provinces.

West Fest Lessens Retail Slump: May Sales Activity in Pueblo Down 4.7% From Year Ago; Hotels and Diners Gain.

Jul. 16--Pueblo's first-ever Wild Wild West Fest helped propel hotels and restaurants to sales gains in May.
Other areas of the local economy struggled, sales tax data from the city of Pueblo shows.
In May, hotel sales rose 8 percent while restaurants reported a 2 percent gain, based on the city's June sales tax report.

Meralco Profit to Surge on New Rate-Setting Scheme

Jul. 9--In a briefing, Alan Ortiz, Meralco board director, said the company expects its net income jumping from P3.14 billion a year ago to between P13 billion and P15 billion at the end of the year.
The increase will come from the three-year windfall of a deferred rate increase under Meralco's Performance Based Regulation (PBR), which regulators approved in April.
The PBR is a rate setting scheme prescribed by regulators whereby a utility's tariffs are determined by the quality of its service to its customers.

Jun. 19--Shares in oil and gas giants BG Group, up 30p at 1057p, and Royal Dutch Shell, 26p better at 1603p, were the subject of a burst of takeover speculation today.
The speculators say Shell wants to bid for BG Group to replenish its reserves of oil, which have been in decline during recent years.
Takeover talk continues to buoy Dana Petroleum with the shares adding 8p to 1330p, despite the North Sea oil explorer denying it has been in talks.

Meralco Eyes Debt Mart to Refinance Obligations

Jun. 18--Rafael Andrada, Meralco treasurer, said that the company has around P2.50-billion worth of loans from banks due this year and another P5 billion to P6 billion by 2013.
"We need to refinance the loans and the timing could be better this year," he said.
The Meralco official said that it would be up to the company's new owners if it would pursue additional borrowings to refinance its maturing obligations.

Meralco Eyes Revenue Windfall From Tariff Scheme

Jun. 12--The utility's shares hit a year-high of P146 per share before closing the week at P145 on Thursday from P131 the previous day, for a nearly 11 percent spike in its market price.
The revenue estimate is based on the company's electricity sales last year.
If you assume 2 billion kilowatt-hours [sales], which is roughly the same level last year, and at seven months [this will be] P500 million in incremental revenues a month," he said.

EDC May Have Cost Lopezes Meralco

May 25--Considered one of the government's crown jewels in the power industry, EDC is the country's second-largest geothermal energy producer.
The Lopez Group acquired the company after the government auctioned state-owned Philippine National Oil Co.'s 60-percent stake in EDC in November last year to raise cash.
The group's power generation unit, First Gen Corp., won the bidding with an offer of P58.50 billion.
