The markets started the week down, with the Dow closing -3.27% lower. The NASDAQ and the S&P 500 were both down on the day closing at 1501.80 and 787.53 respectively. The 10-year price was up today with yields closing at 2.712%. Both oil and gold contracts were down today with oil settling at $48.41 and gold at $917.70. The markets were down today on news that the government had rejected GM’s (GM: 2.70, -0.92 (-25.41%)) and Chrysler’s restructuring plan. Share prices fell over -25% as a result of the poor news. Thesis: Automotive Replacement and Accessories

I've been looking at this automotive replacement (and accessories) business for a while as a "Pooring of America" theme. This could be both a cyclical (recession) and indeed potentially secular (if American's start increasing their savings rates and not flip cars every 3 years) play. I have yet to pull the trigger but here are the charts of the main candidates on this thesis. I am quite familiar with these companies as I worked in a supplier who sold into these businesses early this decade. The top two have the better charts of the foursome... Economy's Decline is Biggest Since '82

Jan. 31--U.S. economic prospects grew bleaker yesterday with a key report showing that the nation's economy finished 2008 with its biggest decline in 26 years.
"It is virtually certain that the rate of decline in almost every sector will accelerate in the absence of a serious stimulus" from Congress, said Dean Baker, codirector of the Center for Economic and Policy Research in Washington.
In keeping with the furious retrenching by business, Philadelphia-area companies in diverse industries yesterday announced an array of cost-cutting steps that illustrate the extraordinary spread of the global recession.

Lehman Brothers (LEH) shares drop S&P's Ratings Services places its ratings on LEH and all related entities on CreditWatch with negative implications, and now believes LEH incurred a "substantial net loss" in the third quarter.
Separately, Ladenburg says LEH's failure to get a deal done is hurting stock; it lowers estimates.
Pep Boys-Manny, Moe & Jack (PBY) posts $0.11, vs. $0.07, second quarter EPS from continuing operations despite 7.5% lower same-store sales, 9.4% lower total sales.

The Pep Boys -- Manny, Moe & Jack (NYSE:PBY), the nation's leading automotive aftermarket service and retail chain, today announced results for the thirteen (second quarter) and twenty-six (first half) weeks ended August 1, 2009.
Sales for the thirteen weeks ended August 1, 2009 were $488.9 million, as compared to $500.0 million for the thirteen weeks ended August 2, 2008.
Re-categorizing Sales into the respective lines of business from which they are generated, comparable Service Center Revenue (labor plus installed merchandise and tires) increased 2.3%, while comparable Retail Sales (DIY and Commercial) decreased 6.0%.
