The Shape Of GDP

While last week GDP growth came in better than expected at 3.5%, which was a very welcome development, there was very little change in the coverall shape of GDP. This is a troubling development for the long term.
GDP is the sum of spending by the Consumer, Private Investment, Government Spending and Net Exports. The Graph below shows the percentage each of them has contributed to overall GDP since 1947.[More...]

The Future Of The Global Truck Business

There is no shortage of stuff kicking around just below the surface of the global truck industry at the moment. The European end of the business has something of a track record in returning from the August break and undergoing seismic shifts during September, so now seems like not a bad time to give the future some thought. These are opinions - predictions as to what is likely - in our view - to happen over the next few months. Now, given that we have riled one or two for proffering opinions in the past, let us make this suggestion here and now: for those who don't like this approach, go and read something else. We do not represent the following as fact, but as views. No more, no less. There are three specific drivers that we believe are set to shape the structure of the (Global) truck business over the next five years. 1) Within the Triad, too many trucks are still being built.[More...]

Analyst Blog: Durable Goods Orders Rebounding

New orders for durable goods rose 1.8%, following a 1.8% gain in April. This is very encouraging news and gives some hope for a second-half rebound in the economy. Still, new orders can be very volatile from month to month, and as the graph below shows, orders are still way off on a year-over-year basis. Perhaps a better way to look at the data is on a year-to-date basis. New orders for the first five months of 2009 are 26.8% lower than for the first five months of 2008. While new orders rose for the month (a good leading indicator), shipments of durable goods (an important coincident indicator) fell by 2.1% following declines of 0.5% in April and 1.9% in March. The declines in April and May do not bode well for the second quarter GDP report. On a year-to-date basis,[More...]

Seeds Of A Recovery?

The initial first-quarter GDP reported was greeted with a great amount of fanfare, despite a terrible headline number. Though the economy contracted at a 6.1% pace - marking the first time we have booked back to back quarters of down 6% or more since the end of WWII - some of the details in the report showed reasons for optimism. As an investor, I realize that you are less concerned with the details that economists seemingly over-analyze and more concerned with what the report means to your portfolio. So, today, I'm going to show you where some of the investment opportunities and risks lie in the current environment. Consumers Opened Their Wallets The biggest positive surprise in the report was that Personal Consumption Expenditures ("PCE") actually contributed 1.50 points to[More...]

Peterbilt to Begin Layoffs at Denton

PACCAR's Denton, TX plant - which only recently turned out its 300,000th truck will begin shedding workers on January 26th, according to this report. How many we know not, and there's little point in asking Robin Easton, as he isn't given to saying much. Or anything. About anything. At all. Which makes this report all the more interesting, as PACCAR's singularly Trappist treasurer is quoted here in print. "Less than 172 workers", he tells the Denton Record Chronicle. Which, in percentage terms, is rather less than the staff reductions at Renton, where the Kenworth plants has been effectively idled. Kenworth's other plant - at Chillicothe - has seen 100 staff go, whereas at Peterbilt's other main plant - in Nashville - <a[More...]
