Rio 2016: Guide To Investing In Brazil

There was a lot of talk about potential host cities for the Olympics lately and the politics associated. That talk died down after Brazil was awarded the honor of hosting. You may be asking “how does that relate to trading”…well my friend Raul of the Shocked Investor is about to make that connection. He has been researching the Brazilian stocks and options recently and more importantly ones traded on American exchanges. Enjoy the article and be sure to leave a comment with your thoughts.[More...]

Public Service Eyes Govt. Funds

Public Service Enterprise (PEG) is pining for federal stimulus to fund its ‘Shovel Ready’ project. It has estimated a budget of $152 million for this smart grid modernization project, which will create around 551 jobs and enhance reliability and security of the electric grids. The US Department of Energy (DOE) could provide a grant up to $76 million, half of the project outlay, under the Smart Grid Investment Grant Program. PEG expects a decision on the grant by the end of this year. Under the project, Public Service will upgrade 40 of its existing substations and deploy 62 new advanced loop schemes (ALS) to improve electric reliability. The ALS will split electric distribution circuits into sections that will serve smaller number of customers compared to conventional circuits. This will cut down[More...]

What Kind of Investor Are You?

One of the keys to successful investing is to identify what kind of trader you are or what kind of trader you want to become. This is important so you can select the right kinds of stocks that fit your own risk to reward ratio and investment style. What's interesting is that so many people believe they're one kind of investor when in fact they are something totally different. So before you say you're a Growth Investor or a Value Investor, or etc., ask yourself; What kind of stocks do you want to be in? Are you looking for: - High flyers and fast movers? - Stocks with big earnings momentum or aggressive growth? - Or maybe solid companies with dependable growth? - Or mature companies with income producing dividends. - Maybe you're looking[More...]

Earnings Season Is Over - Who Were The Growth Leaders?

Earnings season is pretty much over now. Many companies managed to beat drastically reduced expectations. As a result, many bears focused on poor earnings quality and the fact that the bar had been lowered so far, it was no great accomplishment to exceed expectations. There were a number of stocks, though, that beat fair and square. We compiled a list of stocks that had increased earnings per share sequentially and year-over-year and increased revenues sequentially and year-over-year. We had 218 stocks that made the list. We then cross referenced this list with the S&P 500 and came up with the following list of 27 stocks: SymbolNameAETAETNA[More...]

Market Report For Friday: Apr 17, 2009

(7:11am ET) There was plenty of economic data released in the US during the day; however the equity market sidetracked until 2pm ET, when with prices at modest losing levels on the week until that point, suddenly, and for no discernable reason, there was a rally that left the indexes with small gains through Thursday. Perhaps traders were anticipating a positive quarterly report from Google (GOOG +2.4% on +151% of average daily trading volume)? After the close, the company did not disappoint, beating both revenue and EPS estimates. The company posted net income of $1.42 billion ($5.16/share), up +8% from the $1.31 billion ($4.84/share) recorded during the same period a year ago. Revenue for 1Q2009 increased +10% to $4.07 billion, from $3.7 billion, excluding traffic acquisition costs. On average, analysts had expected earnings per share of $4.93 and revenue of $4.08 billion, according to Yahoo Finance.
Biotech Industry - Industry Outlook

Last year, the Biotech industry as a whole achieved a much better performance than the market. Both the NASDAQ Biotech Index and AMEX Biotech Index outperformed all three major market indices (Dow Jones Industrial Average, NASDAQ Composite and S&P 500) in a large margin. The major indices declined as much as 40% while the NASDAQ Biotech Index declined only 12.6% and the AMEX Biotech Index was down 17.7%. However, when the recession enters into its third year, the Biotech industry is not doing better than the market, which has been evident by the indices' performances. As of April 9, 2009, AMEX Biotech Index declined 3%, and the broader NASDAQ Biotech Index was down 6.8% (AMEX Biotech has 20 biotech companies while NASDAQ Biotech Index includes over 130 component companies). Although the Dow and S&P 500 also declined a similar percentage, technology-laden NASDAQ actually has a gain of 4.8%, which is more comparable to the biotech indices.
So Who's Got The Money? This Screen Gives A Clue

There have been a number of portfolio managers who have been quoted as saying that the safest companies to invest in these days are the ones that don't need to continually go to the credit markets to fund their businesses. These are companies with substantial piles of cash that should allow them to ride out this recession without having to pay exaggerated borrowing costs in today's credit markets. Though corporate bond issuance is currently robust, spreads are still quite high with the yield on double-A bonds more than 3.5% higher than comparable Treasuries. This is better than last year but significantly worse than the historical average. For bonds that are rated less than double-A, terms get even tougher and demand is correspondingly weaker. I ran a screen this weekend (all numbers are as of Saturday morning) to identify those companies with big cash stockpiles. Rather than look at the absolute value of cash, I looked for those companies[More...]
