Retail Industry : Industry Outlook

In February, we've seen several retailers deliver better-than-expected results for the fourth quarter. That resulted in some eye-popping one-day gains of 10%, 20% and even 30%. In most cases, the upside was due to extremely low investor expectations associated with the 2008 holiday season and not an improvement in their underlying business. Despite the positive reaction to retail earnings reports, we remain negative on the retail industry. Our negative view of the group is based on the weak economic environment, higher savings rates and de-leveraging in the financial system. These factors all point to continued pressure on consumer spending. The weak economy has caused many to lose their jobs, while many others live in fear of losing theirs. This elevated level of fear is causing many consumers to cut back on purchases and look for ways to save on the purchases they do make. Consumers have also experienced a great deal of[More...]

Watching Dow 8,000

The Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DJI) was back below 8,000 this morning. This is the third consecutive day that the blue-chip average has traded below 8,000. Previous drops below this level have been followed by large upward moves. Should a rebound fail to occur, the danger that the blue-chip average could drop to new lows significantly increases. Trading ranges hold until they don't, and the risks of downside breakout are rising. There is a rational reason for the current weakness. Fourth-quarter earnings have been lousy, the problems in the banking sector are not getting solved and visibility is lacking. <P[More...]

From November 20, 2008 to January 6, 2009, the S&P Retail Index (RLX) rose 41%. Not a bad move for a group of stocks that had one of the worst holiday shopping seasons in recent memory. It appears that investors became more bullish on retailers because of seemingly cheap valuations, anticipated benefits from a federal government stimulus package, and a better economy in the second half of 2009. In our view, the 50-day upward move in retail stocks was a bear-market rally. Investors should begin to lighten up on exposure to retail stocks. We expect the group to give back those gains as it becomes apparent that many retail stocks are not cheap, that the stimulus will provide at best a short-term boost, and the economy will not turn until 2010. Our negative view of the group is based on the awful 2008 holiday season, a reduction of leverage in the financial system and, most importantly, consumer attitudes shifting away from borrowing to[More...]

Despite the apparent values in retail stocks, there are few reasons to get excited about the retailers. Consumer spending will remain subdued for the next few quarters, and that will lead to retailers' earnings estimates declining for the next several months. ? OUTLOOK The holidays are right around the corner. This is the most important period for retailers, as many generate about half of their annual sales during the holiday shopping season. The way things are shaping up, this may be one of the worst holiday shopping seasons in recent memory. Economic data from this summer suggest that consumer spending may have turned negative in the third quarter, which means the consumer was in tough spot before the credit crunch turned into a full blown crisis. The problems in the credit markets will only exacerbate the problems negatively affecting consumer spending.
Identifying Companies to Benefit from Bull or Bear Market Outlook

SmallCapSentinel.com has just released an article addressing the market direction over the next 60 days, fusing bull, bearish and flat market perspectives into one useful commentary. Companies are classified as to which could benefit individually from each market condition and sentiment.Visit the link below to see in which group your investment is categorized:http://smallcapsentinel.com/chooseEach of the following companies are specifically addressed: Pfizer Inc. , PetMed Express, Inc. , Texas Instruments Inc. , Ford Motor Co. , Alcoa, Inc. , United States Steel Corp. , and Siemens AG .From the report: I always enjoyed reading the 'Choose Your Own Adventure' gamebooks. Each story was written from a second-person point of view, with the reader assuming the leading role and making choices that determine the main character's fate. Regardless of how the author intended this book to go, I ultimately had responsibility for the outcome, even if it wasn't favorable. As the stock market is always a multi-option adventure, instead of espousing my usual opinions on the vagaries of the economy and investments I thought it would be prudent to allow you to choose your own adventure by first selecting your market sentiment and then seeing which companies stand to benefit most from that perspective.'To determine which group your company falls in visit:http://smallcapsentinel.com/chooseBe sure to register for future commentaries sent directly to you.Statements herein may contain forward-looking statements and are subject to significant risks and uncertainties affecting results.
