When people learn that I am an income investor, the reaction is often a desire to discuss high-yield investments. The uninitiated commonly confuse income investing with high-yield investing.
Cap and Trade Part Two: How We'll Profit

We got hundreds of responses to last week's cap and trade essay. Plenty of readers were shocked by how much the new bill will cost you, me, and every American family... Not J.M., who writes, "Ask me if I am surprised. Congress (as well as local governments) treats us as cash cows, which in fact we are." Some readers didn't like questioning our government's huge new tax policy. R.R. writes, "Matt's article on the energy legislation is a political rant and fear mongering." And D.B. gripes, "I wish I could cancel and get my money back when I read your Republican and Libertarian views. Why don't you just stick to providing investment advice and leave the environmental commentary to scientists?" Well, D.B., I'd be sad to see you go. But thanks for cutting to the chase: how to profit. It's time to talk about the best ways to recoup some[More...]

Earnings Season Is Over - Who Were The Growth Leaders?

Earnings season is pretty much over now. Many companies managed to beat drastically reduced expectations. As a result, many bears focused on poor earnings quality and the fact that the bar had been lowered so far, it was no great accomplishment to exceed expectations. There were a number of stocks, though, that beat fair and square. We compiled a list of stocks that had increased earnings per share sequentially and year-over-year and increased revenues sequentially and year-over-year. We had 218 stocks that made the list. We then cross referenced this list with the S&P 500 and came up with the following list of 27 stocks: SymbolNameAETAETNA[More...]

Several large companies announced dividend increases over the past week. One of the most notable bullish calls came from the telecom sectors as AT&T (T) showed confidence in its business model by increasing its dividend payment to shareholders for the twenty fifth consecutive years. Despite the tough macroeconomic conditions AT&T (T) is still committed to raising its quarterly dividend. The board announced a 2.5% increase of the quarterly payment to to $0.41/share. The stock currently yields 5.70%. One thing that still concerns me with AT&T however is the high current dividend payout ratio. You could check my analysis of AT&T from this link.
