Salesforce.com (CRM): Booming Despite The Economy

Shares of Salesforce.com (CRM) have gotten a major boost on Friday after the customer relationship systems company reported excellent results. Net income was $21.2 million which was more than double the $10 million of net income from the quarter a year ago. On a per share basis, EPS came in at 17 cents, versus estimates of 15 cents. The earnings growth was actually driven by increased revenue, as opposed to so many companies right now who are beating estimates by trimming costs. For Salesforce, Sales grew by 20% to $316.1 million, and new customers signed were especially strong growing 32%. Affymetrix (NASDAQ:AFFX) is getting lots of commentary followin better-than-expected Q2 results: - Piper Jaffray is upgrading their rating to Overweight from Neutral and raising their target to $11 (prev. $5) Firm notes the upgrade reflects a favorable valuation, improving operational metrics and favorable revenue mix. They note the management is successfully restructuring the company's manufacturing cost base (and now turning their attention to operating expenses), the valuation (currently trading at 1.0x 2010 EV/Rev estimate) and the changing mix of business away from markets where they are less competitive (i.e. GWAS) and shifting resources toward markets that benefit Affy's products (such as pharmacogenomics). Lincoln Electric (NASDAQ:LECO): Downgraded to Sell, $35 Tgt at Piper Jaffray

Piper Jaffray is out downgrading Lincoln Electric (NASDAQ:LECO) to Sell from Neutral, while lowering tgt to $35 from $44 as they believe that negative earnings revisions over the next year and sustained low visibility around a recovery will push the stock back to the lows ($35 per share) set in late-November 2008. LECO shares have rallied along with other 'infrastructure plays'. It is becoming increasingly clear that benefits from the federal stimulus package will be minimal at best in FY09 and more likely to come in FY10/FY11. In the meantime, Piper's channel checks with key customers and end markets are pointing to deteriorating unit volume demand and price concessions. Both Baidu.com (BIDU) and Ctrip.com (CTRP) have taken serious whacks this week, showing yet again the risk to holding individual equities in this type of market is simply too great - hence the better focus appears to be ETFs as the "risk" part of risk/reward is overweighted - bad news is not just punishing stocks now, it is obliterating them. Oct. 28--Profits were up 50 percent and yet third-quarter sales still missed expectations at Buffalo Wild Wings, the company said Tuesday, unleashing a sell-off that pushed the stock down 4 percent in after-hours markets.
Analysts polled by Thomson First Call expected earnings of 38 cents per share on revenue of $136.5 million.
And company CFO Mary Twinem told analysts on Tuesday's earnings call that chicken prices have climbed even higher, averaging $1.77 a pound so far in the fourth quarter.
