Potash (NYSE:POT): BHP Could Pay USD 125-130 for Potash Corp. (POT) - Merrill Lynch

Merrill Lynch/BAM is out with a major call on Potash (NYSE:POT) saying BHP Billiton should buy the potash producer. Firm estimates that an all-cash bid for POT at a 30% premium could be 13% EPS accretive in years 1 and 2. From discussions with clients during recent marketing, they believe the market is receptive to BHP acquiring potash assets.[More...]

The indices extended their rally to nominal new 2009 highs earlier today, as they spiked up on positive economic news. The Nasdaq 100 reached 1655, and the S&P 500 neared 1038. They sold off sharply but held support, and then bounced mid-day to retry another run to highs, but they fell short and sold off most of the afternoon, although did have a bounce in the last hour or so to preserve the gains for the day.

Net on the day the Dow was up 30.01 to 9539.29, about 80 points off its high. The S&P 500 gained 2.43 to 1028, 9 points off its high, and the Nasdaq 100 was up 5 points at 1639.90, about 16 points off its high.

Advance-declines were positive by about 3 to 2 on New York and by just 210 issues on Nasdaq. Up/down volume was 3 to 2 positive on New York on total volume of a light 1.1 billion. Nasdaq traded 1.85 billion and had a little less than 4 to 3 positive volume ratio.

Potash (POT) Past Arc And Current Fibonacci Resistance

Potash (POT) was a major “go-go” stock of 2007 and part of 2008 as it helped investors ride up the commodity market ‘boom,’ but the crash was severe in the latter part of 2008, erasing almost all of the prior gains. We’ve rallied sharply in 2009, but as you’ll see from the chart, the recent 70% rally from the late 2008 lows into the June 2009 highs was only able to reach the 38.2% Fibonacci retracement price of the entire down-move, which provided major resistance there. Let’s take a look at both of these examples. First, I wanted to show the ‘arc’ beginning in late 2006 that traversed upwards into a climax at the $240 level when the arc turned vertical - such price advances are[More...]

The day started out moving lower, but the indices held support and turned it around sharply. The Nasdaq 100 (NDX) rallied from a session low from around 469 to the 493 1/2 area, and the S&P 500 (SPX) at that point rallied from 916 to about 927. A mid-day pullback brought them back to test. They bounced late afternoon, but couldn’t break out and then rolled over towards the end of the session, paring back the gains.
