Pure play? or Diversified? When it comes to alternative energy companies, the list is long and there is certainly reason today to believe that it is about to get a whole lot longer. Already on the Seeking Alpha home page today, we have seen multiple submissions by socially responsible and sustainability focused firms heralding the opportunities that are now present thanks to the new President. We share the optimism in the alternative energy space, however, we see that there are clear differences in how to approach this strategy. First, while there may be a lot more spending by the government on alternative energy resources, lets be clear how the project and approval process works in Washington. Let’s just say it isn’t necessarily an efficient arbiter of the optimal solution set. I wrote in Cash is King on MondayAnyhow, my other point on cash is this - in a market devoid of credit and quite frankly years of contracted credit ahead of us, cash will again be king. Balance sheets will matter again. And in the near term any debt is a Sword of Damocles as all it takes is Moody's or S&P to downgrade your debt and you face a short selling attack (unless you are on the protected list of course!) which will cause the stock to lose 40% in 5 minutes.[More...]

After clearing the bogey at S&P 1405 at last in the previous week, the index has now pulled back to that level and for now bounced off it... hence old "resistance" now becomes new "support". It will be interesting to see if this holds but I expect it to do so for now.Some other thoughtsAs I've said in the weekly round up, the "strong dollar" fantasies have usually lasted 5-10 days or so... it was nearing midnight. Budgets Feel Hit From Plant's Closure

Aug. 27--"Of the 17 years I've been a councilman, this is the tightest budgets I've ever seen," said Jimmy Gill at a Wednesday budget hearing.
The reason for the city's financial angst is the closing of Pilgrim's Pride, which means losses for the Electric Department of $1.2 million per year or 1.3 percent of its budget; the Water Department is losing 12.3 percent of its budget, or a little more than half a million dollars; Wastewater is losing $1.6 million in revenue, and the Gas Department, $1.3 million, for a total loss to the city of $4 million.
"We are dealing with the impact of the closing of Pilgrim's Pride," said Utilities General Manager Gary Scroggins.

Proposed Wastewater Budget 'Ugly,' Manager Says

Aug. 27--ATHENS -- Water/Wastewater Manager John Stockton had one word for his proposed budget, and that word was "ugly."
Stockton was among those who made their fiscal 2010 budget proposals to the Athens City Council on Wednesday.
His combined budget will take an estimated $1.6 million hit from the closure of Pilgrim's Pride, a chicken processing plant that will close in September or October.

Aug. 18--The low bidder on renovations to the old Pilgrim's Pride warehouse into a county event center came in at $1.4 million.
Limestone County Commission Chairman David Seibert tabled approval of low bidder Cooper Construction of Birmingham Monday until he has a chance to further discuss the project with officials of the firm.
"I didn't have a chance to talk with them before awarding the bid, so I'm going to go to Birmingham on Friday and talk with them about the construction time and penalties for going over," said Seibert.

Education Funds Take Hit in Plant Closure

Aug. 7--ATHENS -- Like other entities in Limestone County, the Athens City Board of Education expects the closure of Pilgrim's Pride to hurt its revenue.
On Thursday, the board held a hearing for its $27 million budget for fiscal 2010.
Financial Director Barry Hamilton said he was "very conservative" when estimating sales tax revenue of $3.3 million.
