In his Invest with an Edge, he suggests, "Investors should consider safe alternatives for this risky environment.
Short Term Income Funds Update

Investment portfolio outcome successes depend primarily upon the age of the beneficiary or account owner and the long term probabilities of inflation, growth, and politics. The age of the beneficiary is well known while the other parameters are guesswork. Short term politics won't matter for a 20-30 year old, but matter a lot for a 60-70 year old. Thus for practical purposes we can ignore the long term and focus on life expectancy of the beneficiary and short term politics. However painful our impressions of the long term may be, we should ignore them. In this sense the outlooks of both younger and older investors are closer than most advisors would have us believe. Many advisors want all of us to stick our money into formula index plans based upon age and never move our money elsewhere.
Coal Industry

For the next 6 months, stocks in the coal industry will most likely meander around current levels until investors get a better sense of the health of the global economy. The status of the housing, credit and job markets will directly and indirectly dictate the medium-term outlook for coal miners and the commodity. The problems associated with the deterioration of the U.S. economy have trickled through the rest of the world, and what have been particularly worrisome are the effects on China and India. In recent years, these two countries have been experiencing rapid growth and their consumption of coal has followed suit, giving support to global prices. However, as exports make up roughly 40% of China's GDP, the global slowdown has decreased China's demand for electricity, iron ore and coking coal. This has put downward pressure on coal prices and producers alike. While we have a medium- to long-term positive view and the high[More...]

Yesterday, I went into my backyard to grill some tasty treats, as it was a pleasant evening and…well…grilled food be good. As I cleaned out my Weber to start my fire, I went into my shed to pick up some fuel for the fire…lo and behold nothing was there. My coal was stolen. I figured…why steal coal now? I mean, coal shares are in the midst of a nasty correction…why in the world would anyone want to try to catch that falling knife? In such a situation most people would have just went out and bought more charcoal..but not me. I had a hunger…but not for burgers.
