Bloomberg had this article out about how the U.S. housing market lost $3.3 trillion in 2008 AND that 1 in 6 people with mortgages are underwater, or 17%. It's not getting any better. We have pending home sales coming out today at 10:00AM - consensus 82.3 (range: 78.2 to 84, previous actual: 82.3). I'll be really surprised if pending sales remained "unchanged". Motor vehicle sales are also coming out (total consensus: 7.7M (range:7.3M to 8.1M, previous actual: 7.7M). This is another consensus estimate where it is also "unchanged". Whatever. Notable Bankruptcies of 2008: Final Tally

In mid-August I predicted that “major” bankruptcies for 2008 would reach 225 (see Bankruptcies Revisited). Through October there had been 172 such bankruptcies, as reported by Bankrupctydata.com. That implied a pace of around 210 bankruptcies, well short of my prediction. At the time however, I suggested that the filing pace was likely to quicken in November and December as the economy deteriorated at a more rapid clip. Sure enough, the final numbers bear out my prediction. Bankruptcies Revisited

In mid-August I predicted that bankruptcies for 2008 would reach 225 (see my post Bankruptcy Update). There had been 120 total bankruptcies at the time. The 120 bankruptcies as of August 15th implied a pace of about 195 bankruptcies, well shy of my prediction. But much has changed since mid-August, so let’s revisit that prediction. According to Bankrupctydata.com, there have been 172 bankruptcies through October. If we assume that bankruptcies continue to accumulate at 17 per month for the rest of the year (the monthly average), the implied total for 2008 would be 206. Ok, finally we have the fire behind the smoke. This morning a press release about the termination of the CFO at A-Power Energy (APWR) - now the first reaction when I see the CFO leaving is abject fright since it usually means a litany of bad news to come. A-Power Energy Generation: - Up Another 7%

A lot of news out of this name - press releases both Friday and this AM. As outlined in the original thesis (Jun 27: New Position in A-Power Energy Generation Systems to Create Alternative Energy Mini Basket) this company has a very solid core business, but the investor excitement will really be coming in 2009 and forward as the wind business begins to (ahem) fly. City gets green light for solar power deal

Nov. 3--Santa Fe and other municipalities will get the green light to purchase power from independent energy developers if the Public Regulation Commission agrees with the decision of a hearing officer.
On Oct. 23, PRC hearing examiner Carolyn R. Glick found that third-party contracts are legal and the energy developers are not a public utility.
Santa Fe and SunEdison have been working on a power purchasing agreement to install photovoltaics at eight city-owned buildings, with the city buying the produced electricity at a competitive rate.
