Public Storage (NYSE:PSA): Downgraded To Underweight At Keybanc

Keybanc is out downgrading Extra Space Storage (NYSE:EXR) to Underweight from Neutral ($6.50 tgt) after the co reported 1Q09 results that were weaker than expected and pointed to a sharper deterioration across the self storage sector, as full year guidance was meaningfully reduced. In addition, the Company had little good news to announce on the capital raising front to act as a counterbalance to the weaker than anticipated core. This fundamental weakness has come on top of a recent runup in EXR's share price of 43% since the end of March vs. a 37% appreciation in the MSCI US REIT index over the same period. The downgrade reflects the downside surprise and likelihood of further deterioration, as well as the less attractive valuation. - Citigroup maintains its Buy rating and $8 target (!?)[More...]

Analysis On The Razor’s Edge

We started writing the Razor’s Edge blog about a year ago as a way to reach out to the investment community through our research. The dual purpose being to highlight some of the most timely and interesting stocks in our research coverage, but also to demonstrate that we have made our research platform specifically to meet the needs of busy but engaged investors, be it individual or institutional. The response has been overwhelmingly positive and we will continue to blog because of this reception. Now, for much of the past year, the stock market has been getting kicked in the teeth and investors would be hard pressed to find an investment strategy that performed anywhere near acceptable levels. However, we are starting to see the market regain a bit of stability over the last month, and the volatile swings are becoming less frequent and less violent in nature. This year’s market has been[More...]

Your Money is Safe in Public Storage

Public Storage (PSA) traded sharply lower yesterday–down nearly 19%–whacked by general market weakness and a downgrade from a Zack’s Research analyst. According to Zack’s, the downgrade was the result of PSA missing its third quarter estimate for funds from operations. The timing of this downgrade is odd as earnings were reported almost a month ago and the self-managed and self-administered Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) specializing in self storage facilities had actually beaten consensus earnings estimates by 7%.
Another day, another REIT implosion - these are simply gold mines for shorts. Commerical real estate is in serious trouble since as we keep saying we are just NOW entering the heart of the recession and many of these companies are already struggling - the lack of access to credit markets is devastating for these guys - many of which have a lot of debt to turnover. Today's REIT of the day is Prologis (PLD) whose CEO resigned, dividend is cut, cutting jobs, you name it - the need for cash is desperate. <a[More...]

Grey Wolf shareholders will own approximately 25% of the combined entity, to be called Precision Drilling. In particular, the GWPDS merger creates a North American land drilling powerhouse with 371 drilling rigs. In addition to getting the significant cash payout, GW shareholders benefit from Precision?s high-tech systems and technology. While we expect GW shares to essentially track PDS from here onwards, we are keeping our Buy recommendation and price objective unchanged. The company remains well positioned to capitalize on the improving operating environment given its large idle capacity, which[More...]

Apr. 17--TAZEWELL, Va. -- With a $4 million economic stimulus prize on the horizon less than two weeks away, administrative and staff personnel of the Tazewell County Public Service Authority will be putting in some extra time this weekend to process the outstanding 640 easements for the Baptist Valley Sewer Project to qualify for funds available to the Department of Environmental Quality through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

"With June 1 as a deadline, I don't see any other way to process that many easements except to bring in all the staff I can, and work from 8 a.m., to 4:30 p.m., (today) and Saturday."

The PSA has been working to find funding for the Baptist Valley East Phase I Sewer Project since as early as 1992 when Spencer was first associated with the PSA.

Apr. 16--Appomattox County supervisors have decided to start the process of forming a public service authority to manage the county's planned water system.

The reason, supervisors said, is because the county does not have an existing framework for a water system and because the town of Appomattox, which does have that framework, has not agreed to join the project.

"If (the town) came on board, we would not need the public service authority because they have all the hardware and resources to perform the necessary activities that encompasses a water department," said Court House District Supervisor Sam Carter.
