Profitable Gannett Still Priced For Bankruptcy

The publisher of USA Today and many other publications reported second quarter results this morning that easily topped estimate. Gannett Co. (GCI) was expected to post earnings per share of $.36, but the actual results came in 10 cents ahead of those projections. Gannett has not beaten estimates by this wide margin in quite some time. Revenue was slightly lower than expected; sales slumped to $1.41 billion or a decline of 18% from a year ago. In addition, the company also revised an earlier write-down upward, and this combined with the earnings beat propelled the stock higher by nearly 30%. Dec. 3--They're trying to get ready for the worst, while hoping for the best --weather, that is.
Carrying whirring chain saws and being hoisted by bucket trucks, workers with the Asplundh Tree Expert Co. have been fanning out across McAlester.
The company has contracted with Public Service Co. of Oklahoma, which is a unit of American Electric Power, to complete a major project in McAlester.

Speakers at Revolution: Oklahoma Wind Energy Conference, ranging from former CIA Director James Woolsey to former Oklahoma Corporation Commissioner Denise Bode, touted the potential benefits of expanding not just the use of wind turbines, but also domestically abundant energies across the board.
The conference continues through Thursday at the Cox Convention Center in downtown Oklahoma City.

AEP-PSO's proposed rider gets judge's OK: The $30 million cost-recovery request requires Corporation Commission approval.

Nov. 18--An administrative law judge Tuesday recommended approval of AEP-PSO's $30 million cost-recovery request, which comes less than a year after the last major bill increase, utility officials said.
The newly conceived "capital reliability rider," filed in August by American Electric Power-Public Service Company of Oklahoma, technically would add less than $1 to the average residential customer's monthly bill over one year to pay for projects done since the last rate case.
"Basically it's an offset," AEP-PSO spokesman Stan Whiteford said.

But the sell-off tarnished Xstrata's shares, which were left nursing a loss of 17p at 1015p.
After failing to convince Anglo American of the benefits of a merger, Davis is now thought to be planning to grow the company organically rather than through acquisitions.

PSO's Energy-Saving Plan Touted at Oklahoma Hearing

Oct. 9--Public Service Co. of Oklahoma officials answered questions Thursday about the utility company's request to implement energy saving programs that could reduce energy use by 46 million kilowatt hours in 2010, which is equivalent of about 3,500 customers a month on average.
Alan Decker, the company's director of regulatory services, said PSO officials want to help their customers decrease their energy consumption.
That's because PSO would not have to build any additional power plants if there is a reduced demand for power.
