Profitable Gannett Still Priced For Bankruptcy

The publisher of USA Today and many other publications reported second quarter results this morning that easily topped estimate. Gannett Co. (GCI) was expected to post earnings per share of $.36, but the actual results came in 10 cents ahead of those projections. Gannett has not beaten estimates by this wide margin in quite some time. Revenue was slightly lower than expected; sales slumped to $1.41 billion or a decline of 18% from a year ago. In addition, the company also revised an earlier write-down upward, and this combined with the earnings beat propelled the stock higher by nearly 30%. The recent restatement of VeriFone Holdings, Inc.'s (PAY) results for the first three quarters of 2007 involves both lower inventory levels and increase in cost of goods. Last week I found a woolly worm crawling up my storm door.

PSO's Energy-Saving Plan Touted at Oklahoma Hearing

Oct. 9--Public Service Co. of Oklahoma officials answered questions Thursday about the utility company's request to implement energy saving programs that could reduce energy use by 46 million kilowatt hours in 2010, which is equivalent of about 3,500 customers a month on average.
Alan Decker, the company's director of regulatory services, said PSO officials want to help their customers decrease their energy consumption.
That's because PSO would not have to build any additional power plants if there is a reduced demand for power.

"This is such an important issue to the state, and the region, that we really need to get it on the list," said Phil Crissup, director of regional transmission affairs for Oklahoma Gas and Electric Co.
The $336 million project was among 10 considered as priorities by Southwest Power Pool staff, but it didn't make the preliminary list.
The project list has not been approved yet by the board of directors for the Southwest Power Pool, a regional organization that manages transmission in Oklahoma, Kansas and parts of Texas, New Mexico, Nebraska, Missouri, Arkansas and Louisiana.

Alternative Energy Solutions Discussed at TU Conference

Oct. 7--Climate change and national security are immediate challenges facing U.S. energy policymakers, but they are also long-term problems needing durable solutions, keynote speaker William Hogan said Wednesday at the National Energy Policy Institute's inaugural conference.
Hogan, research director of the Harvard Electricity Policy Group, recounted the folly of such well-intended but ultimately futile experiments such as coal-to-liquids technology and the Energy Independence and Security Act.
Hogan's warnings echo a theme of the year-old NEPI, which makes its headquarters at TU and intends to deliver a comprehensive report on alternative fuel options early next year.

AEP Proposes Energy Saving Plan: The $80 Million Program Would Cost Consumers Another $1.53 Per Month. Web Headline Goes Here

Sep. 18--AEP-PSO's proposed three-year energy-efficiency program initially will cost $80 million in added rates if it receives state approval, but the utility estimated Thursday that customers could save $186 million overall.
The plan calls for 16 new or updated programs to save on power generation using more efficient appliances, lighting, weatherization and equipment tune-ups.
"Ultimately, the programs will provide energy-savings solutions for our customers that far outweigh the costs," AEP-PSO consumer program manager Kathy Champion said in a statement.

GE Enters Growing Offshore Wind Market

Sep. 15--SCHENECTADY -- General Electric Co. grabbed a major foothold into Europe's growing offshore wind market Monday by completing the acquisition of a Norwegian wind turbine company.
But Victor Abate, the head of GE Energy's Schenectady-based renewable energy unit, announced at an industry conference in Sweden today that the deal had been completed.
"The acquisition of ScanWind is an important step in our strategy to place GE in a strong position in the growing offshore wind segment," Abate said at the European Offshore Wind Conference in Stockholm.

AEP-PSO Wants Increase: The Company is Asking for a $30 Million Annual Rider, Which Would Add $3.79 to an Average Bill.

Aug. 15--Seven months after AEP-PSO's $81.4 million rate increase took effect, the utility asked for state approval Friday for a $30 million annual rider to be added to electric bills.
Company spokesman Stan Whiteford said the proposed rider is for unrecovered reliability investments made since the rate case.
The rider also may help delay or minimize the next rate case, he added.

Councilor Sees Opportunity in Wind Farming: He Wants the City to Buy Electricity From a Proposed Cherokee Nation Operation.

Jul. 27--Wind power is blowing across the country, and at least one Tulsa city councilor hopes to harness some of it from a proposed Cherokee Nation wind farm.
"I think this is exactly what we need," Councilor Dennis Troyer said about capturing the renewable energy source to reduce the city's power costs.
Brett Fidler, the city's director of sustainability, said the city and tribe are in the early stages of researching the feasibility of a wind energy partnership and are to meet next month.

AEP-PSO Approval Rate Falls Sharply: Customers Were Irked About the Utility Raising Rates Earlier This Year.

Jul. 17--AEP-PSO's score for satisfying its residential customers fell more this year than any other utility listed nationwide, according to a J.D. Power and Associates study released Thursday.
The total was 47 points lower than last year's overall rating, the biggest decline among 121 utilities ranked by J.D. Power.
"They had a tough cycle here," said Jeff Conklin, a senior director with J.D. Power.
