The emerging positive narrative of a favorable outlook for the U.S. economy has done wonders for the markets, particularly equities and commodities. The broad equity markets as well as most commodity groups are up smartly from their early-March lows. Crude oil's gains have been even more impressive, given its heavy leverage to the health of the global economy. Our view is that oil should be able to hold onto its recent gains and consolidate around current levels, provided this favorable economic view remains in place. While we have greater confidence in the staying power of the current oil rally, this does not mean that we will not see any short-term pullbacks. On the whole, we expect oil prices in 2010 to be higher than the 2009 levels, but remain significantly below the 2008 peak levels. Crude oil's near-term fundamentals remain dismal, to say the least. While downside risks remain, the overall outlook for the oil sector has improved in recent days, owing largely to the tentative signs of a supply response to anemic global demand. With demand falling sharply due to worldwide economic problems, inventories started building at a faster rate since last fall. In response, OPEC (which accounts for roughly 40% of all oil supplies) announced a number of production cuts. While there was ample skepticism early on regarding OPEC's ability to enforce the announced cuts, recent evidence suggests a significant level of compliance within the cartel. Our downgrade of Patterson-UTI (PTEN) shares reflects our bearish view of the North American land drilling scene. The expected drop off in drilling activities, in response to a combination of commodity-price weakness and credit market tightness, will weigh on the fortunes of all oilfield service players in general and land drillers (such as Patterson-UTI) in particular. Patterson-UTI remains particularly vulnerable to this negative outlook given its lack of contract coverage and heavy spot market exposure. Small-cap managers see good bets in energy stocks

BOSTON - As market observers watch for early signs that better times are around the corner, they're paying close attention to small-company stocks, which tend to recover earlier than large-company stocks coming out of a recession.
Small-caps collectively suffered a 26 percent loss in the fourth quarter compared with a 22 percent decline for large-caps, according to fund tracker Lipper Inc. But that's mainly because small-caps had a terrible start to the quarter in October and November.
ERIC CINNAMOND, INTREPID SMALL CAP FUND (ICMAX): This value fund has roughly doubled its assets to $40 million in recent months, as investors were drawn by its relatively strong performance in a lousy market.
