Kirkland's, Inc. (KIRK) shares are up 111% year-to-date and have rewarded those buyers who were bottom fishing at much lower levels. We continue to applaud Kirkland's for taking the necessary steps to weather the current storm by focusing on cash flow and closing its unprofitable stores. Moreover, we believe the company's second-quarter results will benefit from higher gross margins and cost controls and are narrowing our quarterly net loss estimate. However, we are less sanguine about the company's prospects for the second half of the year. Macro headwinds will continue to pressure consumer discretionary spending, and the consumer will not be helped out by those $600 tax rebate checks, as they were in the second quarter. Oct. 11--JUST THE NAME -- Dell -- seemed to promise the Triad and North Carolina a future economy driven by clean, high-tech industry.
Just five years ago, the prospect of Dell and the $500 million FedEx hub at Piedmont Triad International Airport were transformational.
Now Dell is on its way out, and the FedEx hub, though newly opened, is not operating at nearly the projected level of flights or employment.

May 28--For more than 11 years, the Triad has waited for an economic shot-in-the-arm from the FedEx Corp. hub at Piedmont Triad International Airport.
Delays -- whether environmental, legal or economic -- have combined to push the start of overnight-sorting operations from June 2003 to this September, although FedEx officials are not guaranteeing that timetable.
There are, however, signs of operational life within the $300 million hub.

FedEx Readies First Phase of Cargo Sorting

May 27--FedEx Corp. is preparing to roll out Monday the first phase of operations in its cargo-sorting hub at Piedmont Triad International Airport.
The company is transferring its ramp operation at PTI, along with 160 full- and part-time employees, into the hub.
Jim McCluskey, a company spokesman, said that the economy will play a major role in how quickly FedEx ramps up operations.

Shin-Etsu Chemical, Taiwan's Powertech Technology to Invest in Elpida

Mar. 26--TOKYO -- Japanese silicon wafer maker Shin-Etsu Chemical Co. and Taiwan's Powertech Technology Inc. are among the five firms planning to help struggling Elpida Memory Inc. raise 45.8 billion yen to shore up its financial base, industry sources said Thursday.
Elpida, the world's third-largest maker of dynamic random access memory chips used in personal computers, said Wednesday it will raise fresh capital by issuing shares in its two recently established subsidiaries to three Japanese and two overseas firms.
Among the five firms, Taiwan's PTI, a memory backend service provider, said it will invest 5 billion yen in one of the two Elpida subsidiaries.

Jan. 17--David Pollard told his nieces on Thanksgiving Day that he would make sure that their Winston-Salem home would have snow if it got cold enough this winter.
Pollard fulfilled that promise yesterday, when nature provided the wintry weather, if not the moisture.
The gizmo, which David Pollard built at his house in Charlotte using plans from the Internet, deposited a couple of inches of snow on the front yard of Mike Pollard's house on Surtees Road in southwestern Winston-Salem.
