Shorting Telecom

After steady selling through most of the day today, a broader selection of charts look good for short sales. Running through sectors, I was struck by the number of setups in the telecommunications and wireless sectors. In each case we have a rally off of the low that failed at significant resistance. The consistency of the pattern suggests that sector stocks will have trouble moving higher from this level. - MBT moved lower today on high volume, and has resistance in the 50.00 area. <img alt="" src="http://www.istockanalyst.com/images/articles/2008-11-05-mbt6mo.png2008117667small.jpg"[More...]

Waiting For The Counter-Trend Rally

The nature of Friday's sell-off, coming as it did after a morning rally and House passage of the bailout bill, indicates we have more downside before we hit bottom. At the same time, oversold conditions make it difficult to find good short entries. To review a few charts:- IWM broke decisively below the January and March lows, although with slightly below average volume.- QQQQ has seen a steep drop and is now very oversold.<a[More...]

Good setups are few and far between, but I managed to find a few I like. I am approaching with care, considering the distinct possibility of a strong counter-trend rally.- PTNR is sitting under resistance after a high volume drop earlier in the month.- MTH: Meritage Homes hit a low of 7.04 in January, and closed at 23.65 yesterday. Premarket futures are indicating a mixed start following some M&A activity (see ROH, CTLM, & XLTC) and better than expected jobless claims (although continuing claims rose). Retail sales, like from Wal-Mart(WMT), also were coming in a little above expectations. Financials are under pressure as concerns remain in place for Fannie and Freddie among many others.
140 Stocks Returning 7% Last Week

Below is a list of all stocks returning >7% in the past week, and over $2 billion in market cap. Always interesting to see what is in favor, and when the market bounces where the money is flowing - the group below is sorted from highest to lowest returnMain themes that were winners last week were: solar, home builders, fertilizer, retail, coal, oil services, and infrastructure. The fund was represented very well - of the 52 long positions, 17 were represented in this group (I bolded the names) (note: PBR is represented by its very heavy weighting in Brazilian index ETF - EWZ). This is essentially why the fund was able to outperform once again last week, despite having quite substantial cash holdings - having 3 of the top holdings earn 11-17% also did not hurt.Quite a few old positions in the fund also did well, I shaded those in green<table str="" style="border-collapse: collapse; width: 268pt;" border="0"[More...]
